As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that OpenLoco is a gem hidden amidst the plethora of modern games. Having grown up playing Chris Sawyer’s Locomotion, it holds a special place in my heart. The recent update to version 24.09 has only served to enhance my love for this game.
On Saturday, we’re marking the 20th anniversary of the timeless economic strategy game, “Chris Sawyer’s Locomotion.” Remarkably, many people are still eager to keep playing it. Although it may not be fully optimized for today’s computers, a dedicated community of enthusiasts has been working on updating it through the OpenLoco project. Guess what? They’ve just released a fresh update for this fantastic enhancement!
What is OpenLoco and why is it so good?
OpenLoco functions as an open-source adaptation of the original game, upgrading its performance by utilizing a superior engine. Yet, unlike a full-fledged remake, it requires the original game’s files for proper operation.
This upgrade offers numerous advantages. It ensures Chris Sawyer’s Locomotion works seamlessly on contemporary PCs and various operating systems. It not only enhances graphics, even up to 4K resolution, but also improves the user interface, artificial intelligence, and almost all significant bugs and technical issues have been addressed. Additionally, the possibilities for constructing and customizing gameplay have been greatly expanded, effectively turning it into an unofficial update or remaster of the original game.

OpenLoco – what’s new in version 24.09?
In the latest update of our project, you’ll find the label 24.09. This version focuses primarily on resolving bugs, but it also presents a significant upgrade: our map generator can now create rivers that run through the terrain as a major novelty.
This year, the authors primarily addressed modifications proposed by players. The number of windows visible on the screen has been boosted from 12 to 24. Additionally, an option to turn off the size restriction for railroad stations was included, and the area in which terrain shaping tools can be used has been expanded significantly (from a 10×10 grid to a 64×64 one).
