In the forthcoming film “Materialists,” produced by A24, Chris Evans portrays John, a character grappling with acting struggles. Although Evans is no longer an unknown actor today, he once shared similar experiences at the beginning of his career, and this resonated with his role. He recently revisited the memory of a particularly dreadful audition for “The Dreamers,” an experience that continues to give him nightmares.
Back in the early 2000s, Chris Evans was working his way up in Hollywood, and before 2003’s The Dreamers came out, the biggest project he’d been a part of was Not Another Teen Movie in 2001. While chatting with IMDb for the release of Materialists on the 2025 movie schedule, he also threw it back to the early days of his career and the terrible audition experience he had for the Bernardo Bertolucci movie, explaining:
In a challenging turn of events, I endured an unpleasant ordeal during a casting call for a highly anticipated film in the early 2000s. As I waited alongside approximately fifteen other men for hours, my anticipation grew. Upon entering the audition room and opening the door, the casting director shook his head repeatedly, saying ‘No, no, no.’ Feeling disheartened, I responded with a sigh, ‘Oh, dear God.’ [Simulates crying].
This story evokes memories of the audition scene from the movie “La La Land“, where Emma Stone’s character is putting forth her best effort, only to be overlooked by the casting directors. In contrast, for Evans, his opportunity was never given, as he received an immediate “No” upon entering the room without even having the chance to demonstrate what he had prepared.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that he endured a lengthy wait for the reply, which is likely why this audition has stayed with him for more than two decades.
The film “The Dreamers” tells a story of an American student in Paris who develops a passionate friendship with two French siblings. Michael Pitt portrays the American character named Matthew, while Louis Garrel and Eva Green play the French siblings. It received generally favorable reviews and holds a 59% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
