Chris Evans Breaks His Silence On Steve Rogers’ Return In Avengers: Doomsday

The First Avenger is finally opening up about his return in Avengers: Doomsday.

Disney was the center of attention at CinemaCon 2026 on Thursday. ScreenRant was there to cover the presentation, where Avengers: Doomsday was a major focus. Kevin Feige, along with directors Anthony and Joe Russo, were joined by Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans. Notably, Chris Evans publicly discussed his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America/Steve Rogers.

After a teaser for Avengers: Doomsday revealed Steve Rogers’ return in December 2025, Chris Evans explained at CinemaCon that he’d only reprise the role if the story justified it, and Doomsday provides that compelling reason for Steve’s involvement. He also jokingly stated his dislike for Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom. The CinemaCon trailer showed Steve reunited with Thor.

Rumors about Chris Evans potentially returning in Avengers: Doomsday started as early as December 2024, before filming even began. Despite this, Evans repeatedly denied being involved, stating in a January 2025 interview, “That’s not true. This keeps happening—it’s been happening every few years since Endgame. I’ve stopped addressing these rumors… I’m happily retired!”

The actor continued to insist he wasn’t involved, telling ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley that while he misses working with the team, he trusts they’re doing great things. He admitted it might be difficult to watch the project come out knowing he wasn’t included. However, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are accustomed to actors denying involvement until Marvel Studios is ready to confirm things officially.

Now that Captain America (Steve Rogers) has returned to the present-day Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s been revealed that he and Peggy Carter had a son. Although Hayley Atwell, who plays Peggy Carter, wasn’t featured in the recent teaser trailer, reports from Deadline indicate she will be in the film, Avengers: Doomsday.

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie will bring together the classic Avengers team with characters from The Fantastic Four and the X-Men (previously from Fox). It’s currently unknown if Chris Evans will participate in Avengers: Secret Wars, which is planned as the concluding film of Phase 6 and the entire Multiverse Saga, with filming scheduled to begin this summer.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is officially slated to open on December 18.
