China Box Office: ‘The Dumpling Queen’ Stays on Top as Holiday Surge Eases

Over the weekend of May 9th through 11th, the biographical drama “The Dumpling Queen,” produced by CMC Pictures, continued its reign at China’s box office, bringing in a total of approximately $6.5 million or RMB46.9 million.

Since its debut on April 30, the movie has earned approximately $39.7 million, as reported by Artisan Gateway. This film, featuring Ma Li and directed by Andrew Lau, portrays the true tale of Zang Jianhe from Qingdao, who established a dumpling empire in Hong Kong following his stranding there in the late 1970s. The story struck a chord with viewers during the prolonged May Day holiday season.

Coming in at second position, the financial thriller “A Gilded Game” from Universe Entertainment garnered a total of $4.8 million. This movie, directed by Herman Yau, is a Hong Kong production that features Andy Lau, Ni Ni, and Jasper Liu in its cast. The story revolves around an ethically-minded finance intern at a global investment bank. To date, it has earned a grand total of $26.4 million.

In third place among comedies, “The Open Door,” which is distributed by Wanda Pictures, garnered $2.1 million during its release. Since it opened on May 1st, the movie has accumulated a total of $13.1 million in earnings so far.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the stunning 4K remaster of Studio Ghibli’s timeless masterpiece “Princess Mononoke,” directed by the legendary Miyazaki Hayao, has maintained its position at the fourth spot in the box office. Over the weekend, it raked in an impressive $1.8 million, bringing its total earnings since its debut to a staggering $12.2 million. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of this anime epic!

In the final tally, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” secured a place among the top earners, pocketing $1.6 million, raising its overall earnings to an impressive $13.9 million.

This past weekend’s overall box office earnings amounted to approximately $23.9 million, a significant drop compared to the previous week which garnered $65.6 million. As of now, China’s total year-to-date box office revenue has climbed to $3.69 billion, representing a 29.8% growth compared to the same timeframe in 2024.
