During the May Day holiday weekend, a good number of Chinese viewers attended screenings, causing “The Dumpling Queen” by CMC Pictures to claim the number one spot at the box office.
I had the pleasure of witnessing the premiere of an inspiring biographical drama that ran from April 30 to May 4, and it raked in RMB123.3 million ($17.1 million), as reported by Artisan Gateway. This captivating film is directed by Andrew Lau and features Ma Li as the lead actor, narrating the true tale of Zang Jianhe from Qingdao who transformed a humble start into a dumpling empire in Hong Kong after finding himself stranded there in the late 1970s.
Coming in second was the financial thriller “A Gilded Game,” produced by Universe Entertainment, which grossed $11.5 million over the weekend under Herman Yau’s direction. This Hong Kong-made drama features stars Andy Lau, Ni Ni, and Jasper Liu, and tells the story of an ethically-minded finance intern working at a global bank.
The blockbuster animation “Ne Zha 2” kept up its remarkable streak in its 14th weekend, earning $6.5 million. This brings its total earnings to a staggering $2.13 billion, breaking records as the top-grossing film of the year and the highest-grossing animated movie ever made. Approximately half a million dollars of this came from Imax screenings.
In a stunning box office performance, the remastered 4K version of Studio Ghibli’s timeless “Princess Mononoke,” originally released in 1997 and directed by Miyazaki Hayao, earned $6.1 million, placing it fourth among all films. A significant portion of this revenue, approximately $620,000, was generated from Imax theaters.
Completing the list of the top five earners was Marvel’s “Thunderbolts,” which amassed $5.7 million in its opening week. This figure includes a gross of $2.9 million at Imax theaters, where the Imax format accounted for approximately 28% of the total earnings during the nationwide holiday weekend in China.
In summary, China’s weekend box office earnings hit an impressive $65.6 million, largely due to the May Day holiday. This has brought the year-to-date total to a staggering $3.65 billion, indicating a significant growth of 31.6% compared to the same period in 2024.
