China Box Office: ‘The Dumpling Queen’ Holds No. 1 for Third Straight Weekend, ‘Ne Zha 2’ Going Strong

For three weekends straight, “The Dumpling Queen,” a beloved biopic from CMC Pictures, held onto the number one position at the Chinese box office.

The movie garnered approximately RMB32.1 million ($4.5 million) during the May 16-18 weekend, raising its total earnings to $46.9 million as per Artisan Gateway’s report. Featuring Ma Li and helmed by Andrew Lau, this film narrates the true account of Zang Jianhe from Qingdao who established a dumpling empire in Hong Kong following his stranding there in the late 1970s.

In the second spot, financial drama “A Gilded Game,” produced by Universe Entertainment, earned $3.7 million, bringing its cumulative earnings to $32.6 million. This gripping production, helmed by director Herman Yau, is set in a global investment bank and features Andy Lau, Ni Ni, and Jasper Liu as its stars. The story revolves around an ethically-minded finance intern.

Thirdly, the comedic production by Wanda Pictures titled “The Open Door” has generated an additional $1.7 million, bringing its cumulative earnings to a grand total of $15.7 million.

In its sixteenth week, the blockbuster animation “Ne Zha 2” from Cococartoon raked in another $1.5 million, pushing its total earnings to a staggering $2.14 billion. This makes it the highest-grossing movie of the year 2025 so far.

In the fourth position this week is the remastered 4K version of the timeless Studio Ghibli animation “Princess Mononoke,” the 1997 masterpiece directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It has earned a total of $12.2 million since its release, with an additional $1.8 million in ticket sales this week.

In a nutshell, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” ended up fifth place in the weekend box office, earning an additional $1.6 million, pushing its overall earnings to $13.9 million.

Over the weekend, the total box office earnings amounted to $23.9 million, representing a drop compared to the previous week, which also stood at $23.9 million. As of now, China’s cumulative year-to-date box office revenue has grown to $3.69 billion, signifying a 29.8% surge over the same period in 2024.
