China Box Office: ‘Ne Zha 2’ Stays on Top as ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Opens in Second

China’s box office remained steady over the March 14–16 weekend, with “Ne Zha 2” continuing its dominant run at the top of the charts. The Cococartoon release grossed RMB 148.3 million ($20.6 million), pushing its cumulative total to $2.064 billion, according to Artisan Gateway. The animated juggernaut continues to lead the market despite being in its seventh weekend of release.

In the cinemas, “John Wick: Chapter 4″ from Lionsgate came in second place with a box office take of $3.3 million. Over the years, this series starring Keanu Reeves has been successful in China, but this particular release did not reach the impressive figures that previous Hollywood action movies have seen during their debuts.

Detective Chinatown 1900,” produced by As One, maintained its third position during the weekend, grossing $3 million. The newest installment in the comedy-mystery series has amassed a total of $488.8 million so far, demonstrating sustained success.

In the box office race, Lian Ray Pictures’ film titled “Always Have Always Will” secured the fourth spot, earning approximately $2.2 million US dollars (equivalent to around 47.9 million RMB). Since its premiere over the weekend, this romantic drama has been consistently attracting viewers, bringing its cumulative earnings to $6.7 million.

Rounding out the top five, Vision Distribution’s “There’s Still Tomorrow,” a hit at home in Italy, added $1.1 million, bringing its cumulative total to $4.3 million.

The total weekend box office came in at $36.1 million, bringing China’s 2025 cumulative box office to $3.32 billion, a 56.4% increase compared to the same period in 2024. With “Ne Zha 2” still leading the charge and Hollywood titles making a gradual return, China’s theatrical market continues to show resilience as it moves further into March.
