Over the week of March 3-9, China‘s box office kept up its strong momentum as “Ne Zha 2” remained in control. This Cococartoon production earned approximately RMB274.9 million ($38.2 million), boosting its overall earnings to a staggering $2.04 billion, as reported by Artisan Gateway. With this, “Ne Zha 2” has made history as the first Chinese film to cross the $2 billion mark at the box office, achieving a remarkable milestone.
The success of ‘Ne Zha 2’ at IMAX cinemas continued unabated last week, raking in an additional $4.2 million in earnings. This brings its total earnings on IMAX screens in China to $148 million and worldwide to $150.6 million. Impressively, this places ‘Ne Zha 2’ at the 6th spot in the all-time IMAX rankings, outdoing movies like ‘Interstellar’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and ‘Dune 2’. In the coming weeks, the film is scheduled for release on IMAX screens in countries such as the U.K., Ireland, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand.
The sequel to “Ne Zha,” titled “Ne Zha 2,” has surpassed “Avengers: Infinity War” and now ranks as the sixth highest earning movie in history.
Coming in second place, the film “Detective Chinatown 1900” by As One Production earned an additional $4.6 million, raising its overall total to a staggering $484 million. The newest installment in the beloved mystery-comedy franchise has been consistently drawing audiences, but it still lags significantly behind “Ne Zha 2.”
In its initial weekend, the movie “Always Have Always Will” by Lian Ray Pictures, which features a destitute man embarking on a journey with an unwell girl, opened in third position, earning approximately $2.9 million.
The film “There’s Still Tomorrow” by Vision Distribution debuted in fourth position, earning $2 million. This movie, directed by Paola Cortellesi, is an Italian blockbuster that tells the story of a hardworking wife and mother in postwar Rome who yearns for a brighter tomorrow.
In its first weekend, the romantic drama “Love Island” by Kai Pictures, ranked among the top five films, bringing in a revenue of $1.9 million.
As a film enthusiast, I was thrilled to witness the impressive debuts of two noteworthy films at the box office. Vivian Qu’s “Girls on Wire,” the Berlinale title, managed an impressive eighth place opening with a gross of $1.8 million. Meanwhile, Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17” bowed in tenth place, also impressing with a debut of $1.4 million, as per Ent Group’s data. These strong openings are a testament to the captivating storytelling and cinematic brilliance of these talented directors.
Over the weekend, I saw the collective earnings at the box office soar to an impressive $60.3 million! This brings China’s grand total for 2025 up to an astounding $3.27 billion – a staggering 60.1% jump compared to the same time frame last year, in 2024. As a movie lover, it’s truly exhilarating to witness such growth in the world of cinema!
