Over the weekend of February 21-23, the Chinese box office was dominated by “Ne Zha 2,” which added an impressive RMB 1.1 billion ($152.9 million) to its earnings, as reported by Artisan Gateway.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the phenomenal success of the Enlight Pictures/Cococartoon release in the heart of the Middle Kingdom. Ever since its grand debut on January 29, this masterpiece has been breaking records, now accumulating an astounding $1.89 billion at the box office! Truly, it stands unrivaled as the most successful film in Chinese cinematic history.
The movie ‘Ne Zha 2’ is breaking Imax box office records again. It earned an additional $15.2 million in Imax revenue over the weekend, pushing its total global Imax earnings to a staggering $131 million in just 26 days. This makes it the ninth highest-grossing Imax film of all time and the most successful animated Imax movie ever, outperforming ‘The Polar Express’ by a significant 69%. This record, which had stood for more than two decades, has now been shattered. To date, Imax’s Lunar New Year lineup has generated $150 million, with ‘Ne Zha 2’ contributing the lion’s share of this figure.
Coming in second position, the film “Detective Chinatown 1900″ from As One Production earned an additional $11.7 million, pushing its overall earnings to a staggering $464.7 million. Despite this, the latest installment of the popular mystery-comedy franchise has managed to demonstrate robustness. However, the reign of “Ne Zha 2” has been so powerful that it’s left few opportunities for competitors to make a dent.
In the latest rankings, Fantawild Animation’s “Boonie Bears 11” placed third, amassing a total of $3.3 million, bringing its overall earnings to $106.1 million. This long-running animated series consistently attracts strong family audiences.
The Japanese animated series “Your Color,” produced by Story (JP), made its debut in the fourth position, earning approximately $1.8 million.
Completing the top five earners, “Creation of the Gods 2” by Beijing Culture garnered an additional $1.6 million, raising its overall income to a massive $164.3 million. This historical fantasy epic, though experiencing a noticeable decline in momentum, continues to be one of the more robust films holding on from the Lunar New Year celebrations.
Over the weekend, the overall box office revenue reached an impressive $178.1 million, boosting China’s annual total box office earnings for 2025 to a staggering $3.06 billion. This figure represents a substantial 74.4% rise compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.
The success of “Ne Zha 2” has propelled China’s box office towards one of its best first-quarter performances in recent years. This surge is driven not only by the dominance of homegrown blockbusters but also by an expanding Imax network.
