Over the weekend of April 25th to 27th, China’s box office showed a consistent but low-key performance. Yet again, the popular animated film “Ne Zha 2” from Cococartoon took the lead in ticket sales.
Over the weekend, the ongoing movie “Ne Zha 2” made RMB21.9 million ($3 million), boosting its total earnings to $2.12 billion. Now in its thirteen consecutive weeks on screen, this film has been breaking records as the highest-grossing Chinese movie of 2025. According to Artisan Gateway, these figures were reported.
In its fourth weekend in theaters, “We Girls,” produced by Meila Media, ranked second, earning $2.1 million. With this latest take, the total box office collection of this prison-themed women’s drama now stands at an impressive $30.7 million.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement over the impressive debut of “Bocchi the Rock! Recap Part 1,” freshly released by Aniplex. Based on the beloved anime series, this movie managed to secure the third spot at the box office with an impressive earnings of $1.3 million on its opening day. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here!
In the fourth spot, “Fox Hunt,” a political thriller depicting China’s international anti-corruption crusade produced by Shanghai Film Group, garnered earnings of approximately $1.3 million. The film’s total earnings have now reached an impressive $11.5 million.
In a shift of positions, “A Minecraft Movie,” produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary, earned $1.1 million in its fifth weekend, placing it fifth overall. To date, the movie has garnered a total of $25.7 million since its initial release four weeks ago.
Over the weekend, total box office earnings amounted to approximately $13.5 million, marking a noticeable decrease compared to previous weeks. Despite this, China’s cumulative year-to-date box office revenue has soared to an impressive $3.54 billion, showing a substantial 38.2% growth compared to the same timeframe in 2024.
There’s a strong anticipation that the market will bounce back robustly during the upcoming May Day holiday, which is traditionally one of the most profitable periods at the box office. A series of new films, approximately 10, are set to premiere over this five-day period. Among them are “The Dumpling Queen,” directed by Andrew Lau and starring Ma Li, as well as “The Gilded Game,” helmed by Herman Yau and featuring Andy Lau. Additionally, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” is also scheduled for release during this time.
