As a passionate admirer, I was initially excited about the upcoming documentary, which promised to intertwine the happenings of that fateful day and the subsequent court case, through the perspectives of those who experienced it firsthand. Yet, an intriguing turn of events occurred during a private screening for Last Take, hinting at a shift in the film’s focus.
Rust filmmaker questions Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: During a Q&A session with The Hollywood Reporter, Rust director Joel Souza expressed that he wished the focus of Last Take documentary had been slightly more on Halyna. This conversation was reportedly quite intense.
As Hutchins’ unfortunate fate and mine intertwined through a shared bullet, I found myself part of the documentary crew, standing alongside other gamers and creators.
Since Metz, Mason, and the deceased cinematographer were close friends, and since Matthew Hutchins – Hutchins’ widower – was the executive producer, the creators enjoyed exclusive insights into the case.

It’s clear to me that’s what you had in mind when we first discussed it, and throughout our conversations over the years, I picked up on signs that you were dealing with stress.
Souza added, “It’s clear that everyone here with a creative mind can relate – when the executives start meddling with your film project, it feels like they’re encroaching on your work.
I’m simply wondering if the collaborators you worked with took steps to safeguard Rachel’s perspective. Let me put it another way: Could you share if the partners made efforts to preserve Rachel’s viewpoint in their work together? If that helps clarify my question, I’d be particularly interested to hear Julee’s thoughts on this topic.
Metz explained, “From the start, Rachel aimed to portray Halyna’s life and work, as well as certain aspects of her untimely demise, since it was the point from which the story originated.
As more collaborators joined our project, it eventually became evident that the tale of Rust had a market value. This aspect was crucial and had to be integrated into the narrative we were crafting.
In the end, our focus shifted from exploring Halyna’s life to delving into her passing, which unfortunately was the direction our investigation took.
Souza’s comments suggest that viewers should not expect Last Take to solely honor Halyna, as the original plan was to highlight her life and profession. However, due to the demands of the true crime industry, the documentary appears to have shifted its focus more towards the Rust case as a whole.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the release of “Last Take,” but unfortunately, the legal struggles of Baldwin and the production setbacks have cast a shadow over Halyna’s story, which might not get as much attention as initially expected.
