Chile’s Top Filmmakers Pablo Larrain, Maite Alberdi and Sebastián Lelio to be Honored at 20th Santiago Film Festival (Sanfic) (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for international cinema, I must say that the convergence of these Chilean cinematic titans at the Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic) is nothing short of a dream come true! It’s like the Big Three of Chilean cinema – Sebastián Lelio, Maite Alberdi, and Pablo Larraín – have decided to gather for an epic film feast, and I can’t help but feel like a lucky spectator at a private screening.

Three Chilean filmmakers, who have previously been honored with or recognized by Academy Awards, are making their inaugural joint appearance at the Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic).

At the festival’s opening on August 18, Sebastian Lelio, renowned for his Oscar-winning drama “A Fantastic Woman” in 2017, Maite Alberdi who has been twice nominated for her documentaries “The Mole Agent” and “The Eternal Memory”, and Pablo Larrain, whose works such as “No” (nominated for Best International Film in 2013), “El Conde” (cinematography nomination this year) and “Spencer” featuring a Best Actress nominee Kristen Stewart will be honored. Their significant contributions to Chilean cinema and, indeed, the global film industry will be celebrated.

As a cinephile, I can’t help but be impressed by the fact that all three of these films have graced some of the most prestigious film festivals globally, such as Cannes, Venice, and San Sebastian. They’ve not only caught the eye of critics but also won accolades from various award ceremonies.

Festival director Carlos Nuñez remarked that they are the equivalent to the Three Musketeers of Chilean cinema – just as Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro, and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu are known in Mexico.

Alberdi will continue with Sanfic and take part in a panel called “Women Directors in Spotlight,” joining other Latin American directors on August 20th. Her first fiction film, “El lugar de la otra,” is competing for the Golden Shell at the 72nd San Sebastian International Film Festival (SSIF) in September.

Larrain is setting off promptly for the Venice Film Festival to showcase his newest work, titled “Maria,” featuring Angelina Jolie portraying Maria Callas. This film is a contender in the festival’s official selection.

During the festival week, Lelio will work on revising his newest production, “The Wave” (“La Ola”), which is a musical drama that draws inspiration from the 2018 feminist demonstrations in Santiago.

Fabula, the production company co-founded by Chilean director Pablo Larrain along with his brother Juan de Dios Larrain, is responsible for many of Chile’s biggest cinematic successes. Notable works under its banner include “El lugar de la otra” (Alberdi) and “The Eternal Memory”, as well as earlier films by Lelio such as “A Fantastic Woman”. More recently, Fabula has been associated with “The Wave.”

Sanfic is set to showcase a special retrospective, marking two decades of Chilean cinema, by displaying the most memorable films from the trio that were screened at Sanfic. This lineup consists of “Tony Manero” directed by Larraín, which clinched the Best Film award in the international competition at Sanfic back in 2008. Additionally, it will feature “La Once,” a film by Alberdi that garnered both the Best Chilean Film and Best Director accolades at the tenth Sanfic edition in 2014. Lastly, “Navidad” directed by Lelio, which received a special jury mention at Sanfic 5 in 2009, will also be part of the presentation.

The 20th Sanfic runs Aug. 18-25.
