‘Chicago Med’ Season 10 Will Include More Humor and Cameos by Departed Actors, Hints New Showrunner: ‘I Like Checking in With People’

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of binge-watching under my belt, I must say that the changes at “Chicago Med” for Season 10 have piqued my interest. The departure of Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider, longtime showrunners, leaves some big shoes to fill, but I’m confident that Allen MacDonald is up for the challenge. His diverse background in shows like “ER,” “CSI,” and “13 Reasons Why” promises a unique blend of emotion and humor that could breathe fresh life into this medical drama.

The transformations taking place in “Chicago Med” aren’t limited to what we see on screen; the appearance and, more importantly, the atmosphere could change significantly following the departure of long-term showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider at the end of Season 9.

Allen MacDonald, with a background in hit series like “ER,” “CSI,” and “13 Reasons Why,” among others, steps into a prominent role on the show, bringing a fresh perspective and unique style to the production.

The series has always been deeply rooted in emotions, and the strong emotional base that Andy and Diane created and sustained for nine seasons is truly admirable. I aim to expand upon this foundation, as I’m passionate about narrating stories with an emotional depth. However, I also intend to introduce a fresh perspective by not only maintaining the emotional intensity of the characters but also infusing humor. I don’t mean standalone jokes, but rather humorous moments that resonate with audiences because they find them relatable or familiar. Laughter is an emotional response; it’s almost a defense mechanism, as people laugh because it helps them keep from crying too.

Upon securing his new position, MacDonald decided to delve deeper into the One Chicago series. He ended up watching all 176 episodes that it comprised.

He expresses his deep affection for the universe and its inhabitants, which he found captivating. Essentially, it was like an exciting playground he couldn’t wait to explore,” he states.

This upcoming season will introduce two new characters: Sarah Ramos portraying Dr. Caitlin Lenox, and Darren Barnet stepping into the role of Dr. Frost.

MacDonald suggests that Lenox isn’t a cozy, affectionate individual; rather, she is highly organized and focused on completing tasks efficiently while working within budget constraints. Occasionally, people may perceive her as indifferent, but it’s not that Lenox lacks empathy. Instead, she tends to evaluate situations from a strategic perspective, believing that excessive time spent chatting with patients or getting acquainted detracts from the overall goal.

With regard to Dr. John Frost, he’s a pediatrician at a local hospital about to shut down. “Dr. Frost is quite charismatic and good-looking, and he understands the power of these traits, employing them to aid his patients,” they note. However, his first encounter was with Maggie Lockwood, who immediately sees through his facade and swiftly brings him back to reality.

The recently introduced actors joined the series following Dominic Rains’ exit; unfortunately, viewers didn’t get a proper farewell to Dr. Crockett Marcel at the end of the last season. However, “there could potentially be a guest appearance by him and others in the future,” according to MacDonald. “What I appreciate about the One Chicago universe is that even when someone leaves the show, they remain connected to the world. I enjoy catching up with people.

“Chicago Med” premieres on NBC Wednesday, September 25, at 8 p.m. ET.
