A Chicago man is getting a lot of attention online after being reunited with his dog after ten years apart.
A touching story is unfolding around Edmon Lighthall, age 51, after a decade-long journey that demonstrates why microchipping your pets is so important.
In 2015, Lighthall’s dog, Peter – a poodle-doodle – ran away from their backyard. For ten long years, Lighthall and his family searched for him, finally reuniting with Peter in September 2025.
On September 22nd, Lighthall received a text message from a pet microchip company letting him know that Peter’s microchip had been scanned recently.

Man credits microchip for helping find his lost dog of 10 years
He was thrilled to learn from Hammond Animal Control that Peter had been found wandering and taken in by the police. The following day, he drove 45 minutes to the shelter and was happily reunited with his dog.
He said it was an incredible moment. He saw Pete, who came over and greeted him, and it felt like Pete recognized him right away.
He told ABC News he’d always felt a strong connection with the person, and was happy things had worked out.
Lighthall posted a TikTok video from the shelter showing Pete joyfully reuniting with his family after being lost.
After ten years, I was finally able to reunite with my dog,” Lighthall shared in the video’s description. “Microchips really do their job, amazing things can happen, and true love can overcome anything to find its way home.
Hammond police highlighted the benefits of microchipping pets, citing Pete’s successful rescue as a prime example in their official statement.
A Hammond Police Department spokesperson said this case perfectly demonstrates the effectiveness of microchipping. Despite being lost for ten years, the pet was able to be reunited with its family because of the microchip.
It’s surprisingly not the first time a dog owner in Chicago has captured attention while searching for a lost pet. Earlier this year, Angel Santiago, a blind resident, became well-known for his determined search for his dog, Bam-Bam, walking seven miles daily and posting flyers.
