Chiara Mastroianni, Johnnie To Join Heavyweight Tokyo Film Festival Jury

As a cinephile who has had the privilege of witnessing some of the most remarkable works of cinema, I can hardly contain my excitement about this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival. The assembly of such an illustrious jury, led by the enigmatic Tony Leung Chiu-wai, is a testament to the festival’s commitment to excellence in cinematic art.

Actors Chiara Mastroianni from France and Johnnie To of Hong Kong, along with other prominent figures, are teaming up with Tony Leung Chiu-wai on the principal jury for this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival. The event is scheduled to take place from October 28th to November 6th.

As part of the esteemed judging panel, I have the honor to stand alongside acclaimed Hungarian screenwriter and director, Ildiko Enyedi, and renowned Japanese actress, Hashimoto Ai.

The details of the entire film and event schedule for the festival will be revealed during a presentation scheduled for late September.

It’s unlikely that Enyedi, who clinched the 2017 Berlin festival with “On Body and Soul,” was chosen by chance for her next project, “Silent Friend.” This film will be Leung’s debut in a European movie role, and Enyedi is directing him.

Enyedi stated that serving on a jury is a profoundly significant and intensely focused endeavor. It’s not a place for casual conversations. Instead, being a juror involves a sequence of profound, insightful discussions.

Previously serving as the festival’s ambassador, Hashimoto expressed surprise at now being a jury member. “The task of impacting someone’s life is indeed daunting,” she admitted. “Yet, I aspire to approach each film with honesty, invest myself genuinely, and wholly engage in the cinematic journey.”

Actress Mastroianni, famed for her performance in “Ready to Wear” (1994) and contributing to the innovative animation film “Persepolis,” was honored with the Best Actress accolade at Cannes for Christophe Honoré’s movie “On a Magical Night.”

It was announced in May that Leung would be taking on a new role. Last year, he graced the festival stage where he conducted a master class and watched the screening of the classic Wong Kar-wai movie “2046.” Previously, he had attended the Tokyo festival in 2000, during which another Wong film, “In the Mood for Love,” was featured in the special screening section. In 2008, Leung revisited the Tokyo festival with the John Woo movie “Red Cliff: Part 1.”
