As a dedicated fan of Asian dramas and romantic stories, I am beyond excited for the upcoming Netflix series, “Chastity High.” Based on real-life events, this young adult series from Japan promises to be a thrilling exploration of love, rebellion, and the complexities of growing up.
It seems that “Chastity High” is set to be the first Japanese young adult series on Netflix, inspired by actual events where a Japanese school faced a lawsuit from a student due to a ban on romantic relationships between pupils.
Starting August 29, this show offers a peek into an exclusive academy that forbids student relationships, leading to upheaval as some defy the regulations and others betray each other.
Robot Communications produced the show, which features Mikami Ai, known for her roles in “Yu Yu Hakusho” and “Undead Lovers,” and Miyase Ryubi, who has acted in “Lovesick Ellie” and “Kururi Who’s in Love with Me.”
A student, often referred to as a “Love Facilitator,” discreetly assists fellow pupils who break the school’s no-dating rule using her intelligence. This clandestine activity generates income for her, allowing her to cover her mother’s laborious tuition payments. Another student, the governor’s son, aims to flee his abusive father and sees the Love Facilitator’s endeavor as a way to earn necessary funds. Over time, their collaboration transforms into a romantic relationship that, unsurprisingly, goes against the school’s regulations.
Netflix asserts that the script draws heavily from thorough investigation into how Gen Z perceives romance, contemporary youth trends, and shifting views on love and relationships.
“Chastity High” is similar to other successful young adult series from the APAC region that have made it to the top global TV charts on streaming platforms. For instance, “Hierarchy” from Korea reached the Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) lists in 72 countries, and “Heartbreak High” from Australia was recently renewed for a third and final season.
