Charlotte Gainsbourg Says ‘I Don’t Need to See My Movies Anymore’ and Fighting for Acting Roles Is Better Than Getting Offers: ‘You Feel Like You Own It’

This year, Charlotte Gainsbourg took part in the Kering Women in Motion Talks at Cannes. She’s there because she’s a key player in Wes Anderson’s latest film, “The Phoenician Scheme,” which boasts an illustrious cast. Additionally, Gainsbourg is currently starring as one of the main characters in the newly-released Amazon Prime Video series titled “Étoile.” This series is produced by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, who are also behind the hit show “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Gainsbourg, who has been attending Cannes for many years and won the best actress prize in 2009 for her role in Lars von Trier’s “Antichrist,” revealed that when she first started going to Cannes as a young actor, she initially struggled with the festival. This admission came during a discussion moderated by Angelique Jackson of EbMaster.

Gainsbourg recounted his most cherished memory as involving Lars von Trier. He expressed great pride in having worked on that movie and showcasing it here, adding that receiving the award made the experience particularly memorable.”

“The film with Lars von Trier stands out to Gainsbourg as his most treasured memory. He felt honored to have been part of it and thrilled to present it, especially since they won a prize for their efforts.

Lars von Trier’s collaboration with Charlotte Gainsbourg began with the movie “Antichrist” in 2011, followed by “Nymphomaniac” in 2013 and “The House that Jack Built” in 2018. Interestingly, Gainsbourg actively sought out this opportunity to work with Trier, as she usually waits for acting offers to come her way. This was a significant departure from her typical approach to her career.

Gainsbourg stated that the only projects he passionately advocated for were his meeting with Lars, which he feared he wouldn’t like, and the film ’21 Grams’. He didn’t participate in any scene, but simply met him. Upon leaving, he thought he might not get this opportunity again. It was something he truly desired. Additionally, the role in ’21 Grams’, I really wanted it. I was heavily pregnant at the time. Ironically, the character was a woman who couldn’t conceive, yet there I was with my growing belly, having traveled to Los Angeles for the part.

She went on, expressing her immense pride in facing those challenges. “It’s not fulfilling when success is handed to you because someone wants you,” she explained. “It instills a sense of reliance on others for validation. But when you struggle and strive for something, it feels like it’s truly yours.

Currently, with all eight episodes of “Étoile” available on Prime Video and the new Anderson movie set to release in theaters by the end of May, Gainsbourg’s career is experiencing a significant spotlight. However, it’s important to note that she isn’t necessarily eager to view her own projects.

Gainsbourg expressed his uncertainty about himself, stating, ‘I no longer wish to watch my own films.’ He derives immense enjoyment from acting, losing himself in the process and interacting with fellow actors. This is what he finds pleasurable. The outcome, however, is not something he desires to witness. He doesn’t require seeing it.

On May 18, Gainsbourg is set to grace the red carpet at Cannes as “The Phoenician Scheme” makes its global debut in competition.
