Charlize Theron Says ‘Old Guard 2’ Post-Production Got ‘Shut Down’ By Netflix, but the Sequel Will Come Out ‘Soon’: ‘I Really Love This Movie’

As a huge fan of Charlize Theron and her exceptional acting skills, I can’t help but be excited about the upcoming release of “The Old Guard 2.” The fact that she personally experienced the challenges that led to production delays only makes me more impressed with her dedication to bringing this project to life.

Charlize Theron insists “The Old Guard 2” will be released “soon.”

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve had the privilege of speaking with an Oscar-winning actress about her upcoming action sequel. She shared that production wrapped around two years ago, but we’ve since encountered a significant delay. “Netflix underwent quite a transformation,” she explained to me at her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party last weekend. “This change led to a roadblock for us during post-production, causing it to halt about five weeks in.”

The strikes by actors and writers contributed to delays in the film’s production. Despite these setbacks, Theron remained confident that the project would not be canceled.

She acknowledged the significant transitions they were experiencing, expressing her comprehension. Now, with renewed energy, they’ve resumed their progress and she’s thrilled about it.

In the year 2020, the initial installment of “The Old Guard” was unveiled. The streaming platform made public that it had infiltrated approximately 72 million households within its first month of release. Based on the comic book of the same title by screenwriter Greg Rucka and helmed by director Gina Prince-Bythewood, this film features Theron as Andy, the head of a tight-knit group of seemingly superhuman immortals (Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, and Luca Marinelli). Their clandestine existence spanning centuries is under siege by a sinister pharmaceutical magnate intent on exploiting their unique genetic makeup.

In the second part, Victoria Mahoney took charge of the helm, while Uma Thurman and Henry Golding came aboard alongside the recurring actors: Theron, Layne, Schoenaerts, Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

As a movie reviewer, I’d put it this way: “This film truly resonated with me. Its significance cannot be overstated. I was passionate about being involved in its creation and I can confidently say that the end result is something I take great pride in and genuinely enjoy.”

In May 2023, “Old Guard” producer Marc Evans hinted at the possibility of a third installment in the franchise. He shared with EbMaster, “The ending of number two sets up some things that could warrant a number three, which is quite exciting for me.”

At the same time, Theron is preoccupied with dance. She recently established The Six Compound dance studio in Burbank.

She shared that she and her children are regulars on the dance scene. This role offers her an opportunity to contribute, as she believes every young person deserves a safe space for imagination and freedom beyond their everyday lives. It’s all about providing an escape. We aim to be more inclusive and innovative in our definition of what dancing can be.
