I was really struck by Charlize Theron’s recent interview with the New York Times. She opened up about a truly harrowing childhood in South Africa, detailing the abuse she and her mother endured at the hands of her father. It’s amazing how revisiting these memories, and speaking about them chronologically, can actually clarify things. She explained that people often want to focus on a single incident, but the truth is, abuse builds over time – years of it, in her case. She described the day her mother shot and killed her father in self-defense, explaining he’d gone to her uncle’s house, had been drinking, and became enraged when she didn’t immediately greet him. He came home consumed with anger and, shockingly, shot through the steel doors just to get inside, making it terrifyingly clear he intended to harm them both.
She explained that her mother went to the safe while her brother was still present. He ran down the hallway, and she shot at him, the bullet bouncing off the walls seven times before hitting his hand. It was a shocking event she struggled to understand. Then, she turned and shot her father, who was opening the safe to get more guns. Theron felt deeply ashamed because everyone knew her father struggled with alcohol, and she was often teased at school. However, no one knew the complete truth. For years, she told people her father died in a car accident, especially at school, because she didn’t want anyone’s pity. She found the thought of sympathy deeply uncomfortable. Eventually, at 16, she moved to Italy to start modeling, but felt guilty about leaving her mother. Her mother encouraged her to go, telling her to build a life for herself because there was nothing left for her in South Africa at that time.
