In the prestigious Un Certain Regard section of Cannes, Charlie Polinger’s first film titled “The Plague” will make its worldwide debut. The distribution rights for the United States will be jointly marketed by UTA and Cinetic, while AGC Intl. will oversee sales in the rest of the globe at the Cannes Film Market.
The movie, penned and helmed by Polinger, features Joel Edgerton (known for “Boy Erased,” “Black Mass,” and “Loving”) along with a group of fresh acting talents such as Everett Blunck, Kayo Martin, and Kenny Rasmussen.
The Plague” tells the tale of a 12-year-old boy dealing with apprehension as he navigates the brutal hierarchy within an all-boys water polo summer camp. He’s unwillingly drawn into a cruel custom aimed at a fellow camper who is said to have “The Plague,” an illness they mock. However, as the boundary between play and reality fades, he becomes increasingly worried that this joke might mask a genuine danger.
This film is manufactured by Spooky Pictures, Hellcat, The Space Program, Five Henrys Productions, and Image Nation. It’s being made by Lizzie Shapiro (known for “Shiva Baby” and “Sasquatch Sunset”), Lucy McKendrick, David Edgerton (famous for “The King,” “The Gift,” “Boy Erased”), Steven Schneider (“Strange Darling”), Roy Lee (“Barbarian”), and Derek Dauchy (“Late Night With the Devil”). The executive producers are Ben Ross, Rami Yasin, Gabi Antal, Reuben Walker, Cullen Conley, Cory Finley, James Presson, Gus Deardoff, and Lexi Tannenholtz.

Filmmaker Polinger, hailing from New York, is set to make his first feature film appearance with “The Plague”. Later in the year, his second project, titled “The Masque of the Red Death”, will start filming. This upcoming production will be backed by A24 and Picturestart, and Sydney Sweeney has been cast as the lead actress.
Apart from his notable acting career, Edgerton also works behind the scenes as a writer, director, and producer. His latest project, “The Plague,” is his first under the Five Henrys production company. He has previously produced and acted in Thomas M. Wright’s “The Stranger,” which debuted at Un Certain Regard in 2022. Additionally, he penned and directed the movies “The Gift” (2015) and “Boy Erased” (2018). Most recently, Edgerton has been involved both as a producer and actor in Clint Bentley’s critically acclaimed film “Train Dreams,” which made waves at Sundance.
Following the triumph of their initial ventures, such as the horror film “Late Night With the Devil,” which set a new record for IFC Films’ highest-grossing opening weekend with over $10 million in U.S. box office sales, Spooky Pictures and Image Nation are now presenting “The Plague.” This movie is one of several upcoming projects from these two production houses, including “Menace” by Randall Okita, featuring Isabel May, and “Hokum” directed by Damian McCarthy, starring Adam Scott.
Polinger is associated with UTA and Anonymous Content, while Edgerton is linked with WME and Anonymous Content as well.
AGC’s exec VP of legal and business affairs Anant Tamirisa negotiated the deal on behalf of AGC.
