Charlie Hunnam Broke His Own Rules to Work on Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim

He’s been in a lot of well-known shows and movies besides Sons of Anarchy, and he’s returning to television shortly with Monster: The Ed Gein Story. Recently, in a new interview, he reminisced about his collaboration with Guillermo del Toro on the 2013 film .

I remember when this actor starred with Idris Elba in that really popular monster movie – it did great with both critics and at the box office! But looking back on things, he actually said he had to bend his own rules a little to take the part. He was pretty honest about it, admitting the script wasn’t his top priority. He just really wanted to collaborate with Guillermo del Toro, and that was enough to get him on board.

The actor explained that he was looking to combine work he felt passionate about with more mainstream movies, and added, “I thought it was a great opportunity to work with a director that I really like,” Hunnam admitted.

He went on to say, “Honestly, I wasn’t interested in the story of huge robots battling massive monsters. I read the screenplay, but it didn’t evoke any feelings in me whatsoever.”

The actor mentioned that, prior to Pacific Rim, he hadn’t starred in a movie he would personally go to see in cinemas. But he couldn’t resist the chance to work with the film’s team. “It was really one of the few times I made an exception to my usual practice.”

Hunnam shared that he increasingly pursued projects he was truly passionate about. He explained this dedication through his commitment to films like , where he famously brought only “a script and a change of clothes.” He went on to say he didn’t speak to his partner or mother for 14 weeks. He also described his intense preparation for the 2017 remake of the prison drama Papillon, which involved losing 35 pounds and spending a week in solitary confinement without food or water.

The Pacific Rim Universe Continues

Despite the fact that Charlie Hunnam didn’t return for any sequels, Pacific Rim still launched a franchise. Critics generally liked the film, giving it a 72% rating based on nearly 300 reviews, while audiences scored it even higher at 77% on the Popcornmeter. The movie also earned $411 million globally on a $190 million budget, which is just a little below the typical 2.5x return needed to be considered profitable. According to The Numbers, it made an additional $59.3 million from DVD and Blu-ray sales. A sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, was released in 2018, and an animated TV series, Pacific Rim: The Black, ran from 2021 to 2022.

The Pacific Rim series will continue with a new show, it was announced earlier this year. Amazon Studios is officially working on it, partnering with Legendary Studios. The show will be available to stream on Prime Video. Eric Heisser, known for creating Shadow and Bone, is writing and executive producing the new series.

In other news, Charlie Hunnam will portray a real person in his upcoming role. Monsters Season 3 will center around the story of Ed Gein, a well-known serial killer and grave robber, and Hunnam underwent a significant transformation for the part. The series is scheduled to debut on Netflix on October 3rd.
