Charlie Cox Got a Call From Marvel Boss Kevin Feige ‘Midway Through 2020’ About Daredevil Return. Then He Heard Nothing For Two Years: ‘It’s Definitely Over’

As a long-time Marvel fan who has followed Charlie Cox‘s journey as Daredevil since the Netflix series, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions reading about his return to the MCU. It’s like a rollercoaster ride that took a detour through the wilderness before finally making it back to the theme park.

Back in 2020, Marvel Studios’ big boss Kevin Feige reached out to me with an intriguing proposition – a possible comeback as Daredevil within the MCU. Fast forward two long years, and it wasn’t until the studio officially unveiled “Daredevil: Born Again” that I could shake off my doubts about reprising the role. Even before this announcement, I had briefly stepped back into the character’s shoes for a quick cameo in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” During those two years, I found myself questioning if I would ever get another chance to embody Daredevil once more.

“Charlie Cox mentioned that he wrapped up filming for the original Daredevil series on Netflix, around the close of 2016 and start of 2018. During this timeframe, we learned the show was canceled. It wasn’t until halfway through 2020 when we received a call from Kevin, expressing interest in resurrecting these characters.”

After Marvel Studios stopped communicating with Cox about a potential Daredevil reboot, he ultimately gave up hope of reprising his role. However, he maintained contact with Vincent D’Onofrio, who portrayed Kingpin, and remained optimistic that they would eventually work together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“From time to time, Vincent and I would exchange words, and he’d express, ‘I sense they’ll reach out. I believe they’re leaning towards us, but they’ll contact us first.’ Each conversation would end with me thinking, ‘This fellow is living in a dream world! He needs to let go. A decade has passed, and yet he persists. It’s done. It’s definitively over.”

Cox expressed surprise when a call came in two years later, revealing that Daredevil would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and star in his own show titled “Daredevil: Born Again.” The initial clips from this series were recently unveiled at Disney’s D23 convention.

In the upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again,” Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as the Punisher, alongside Deborah Ann Woll playing Karen Page, Elden Henson portraying Foggy Nelson, and Wilson Bethel returning as Poindexter. New additions to the cast include Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Jeremy Earl, and Ayelet Zurer.

The journey to the small screen for “Daredevil Born Again” has been a lengthy one. Last year, production faced a setback due to the WGA Strike, causing filming to halt. At that point, only around half of the episodes had been filmed before the shutdown. In response, Marvel decided to completely revamp the project, retaining some footage but making significant changes overall. Following the departure of head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, the show took a new creative path. Dario Scardapane, who worked on Netflix’s Marvel series “The Punisher” as a writer and executive producer, has now taken over as the showrunner.

The series “Daredevil: Born Again” isn’t set to release on Disney+ until March 2025, but plans for a second season are currently underway.
