Charli XCX’s Movie Is a ‘2024 Period Piece’

Charli XCX’s film, *The Moment*, playfully asks the question of “what if?” It’s a fictional look back at an alternate 2024, reimagining a particularly wild summer for the artist, as she explained to *Vanity Fair*. The mockumentary shows a fabricated version of her life on tour, visiting Storm King, sparking political conversations, and even collaborating with Lorde on remixes. Director Aidan Zamiri, who previously worked with Charli on her “Guess” and “360” music videos, describes it as exploring what would have happened if Charli had made different choices during her *Brat* era. According to Charli, while it isn’t a traditional tour or concert film, the idea stemmed from pressure to create one. She believes it’s a work of fiction that still feels incredibly authentic to the realities of the music industry.

The concept for *The Moment* began as a voice memo Charli sent to Zamiri while she was on tour. Zamiri described it as a raw expression of her current emotions to *VF*, unknowingly echoing the title of Charli’s 2020 album, *How I’m Feeling Now*. He explained it captured the feeling of almost achieving everything she wanted and the emotional impact of that realization. Zamiri and Bertie Brandes then developed the screenplay based on Charli’s voice memo, receiving her feedback as she continued touring. Charli herself admitted she struggles to reflect on things objectively because she’s always focused on the next project. She sees her work as a way to process her own thoughts and feelings, constantly writing about herself and how others perceive her – a cycle she calls ‘meta.’

I’m so excited about this project! Alexander Skarsgård, who was amazing in *Pillion*, is joining the cast alongside Rachel Sennott, Kylie Jenner, and Kate Berlant. He’s playing the documentarian – basically, the record label is hyping him up as the perfect person to film Charli XCX and really capture what makes her special. Apparently, that puts him in the role of something of a ‘villain’ in the story, according to the director, but Charli isn’t exactly playing the ‘hero’ either. She described her role as playing a darker, more intense version of herself, and she joked that her previous film, *Overcompensating*, was just a warm-up for this!
