Actors Charles Melton (“May December,” “Warfare”) and Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) have been announced as the main voice talent for “In Waves,” an upcoming animated film based on the popular graphic memoir by illustrator AJ Dungo, which is set against the backdrop of California’s surf culture.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about an upcoming film that I believe will resonate deeply with many. This heartfelt production, titled “Unconditional Love,” is a poignant exploration of first love, loss, and the power of memories. The movie is a joint venture by Silex Films, Charades, and Anonymous Content, and it’s being skillfully directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen.
Phuong, an alumna of prestigious French animation schools Gobelins and La Poudrière, has demonstrated her artistic prowess through her work on the Silex-produced animated series “Brazen” and her Oscar-shortlisted short film “My Home.” I can’t wait to see what she brings to this beautiful story.

Title “In Waves” – recently unveiled at the Annecy Animation Showcase – revolves around AJ, a reserved teenager from Los Angeles who develops a profound affection for Kristen, an energetic surf enthusiast. Their mutual love for the sea serves as their anchor as they navigate the challenging tides of illness that befall them.
I’ve had the privilege of being immersed in a film that seamlessly combines my personal journey with the rich history of surfing. This cinematic piece resonates deeply with the emotional intensity found in Dungo’s original work. The graphic novel has garnered significant international recognition, such as the BD Fnac-France Inter Award (2020, France), the Prix des Libraires du Québec (2020, Canada), and the American Library Association Alex Award (2020, USA). It was also honored by being selected for the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France.
In Waves” is a production jointly made by France 3 Cinéma and Belgium’s Panique!. The screenplay was penned by Fanny Burdino and Samuel Doux, who have worked on films such as Joachim Lafosse’s “After Love” and Laurent Cantet’s “Arthur Rambo”. Additionally, it is associated with Warner Bros. Discovery’s upcoming first original French miniseries, “The Mythomaniac Of The Bataclan”, directed by Just Philippot.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be making my debut in an animated feature as the voice artist, a role which marks Melton’s first foray into this realm. Simultaneously, Hsu has previously lent her voice to “The Wild Robot.” We’re both set to spearhead the English voice cast in the upcoming production, “In Waves.” The French version, on the other hand, will be helmed by Lyna Khoudri, from “The French Dispatch,” and Rio Vega of “Deerskin.
