As a long-time fan of reality TV shows, I find it heartbreaking and appalling to hear about Charity Lawson‘s experiences on “Dancing With the Stars.” As a therapist myself, I believe that mental health should be taken seriously, especially in high-pressure environments like reality television. It’s alarming to learn that Lawson felt bullied, received death threats, and was subjected to racial discrimination throughout her time on the show.
Charity Lawson is getting honest about her time on Season 32 of “Dancing With the Stars.”
On the Monday release of Cheryl Burke’s podcast titled “Sex, Lies and Spray Tans,” the ex-Bachelorette shared insights about her journeys on “The Bachelor”, “The Bachelorette” and “Dancing with the Stars.” She started by expressing that, being a therapist herself, she thought it would be beneficial to have a therapist present during the filming of “DWTS.”
“I’m shocked that you didn’t realize this, but participating in ‘Dancing With the Stars’ was a real challenge for me mentally,” Lawson explained to Burke. “The show was fantastic, but it took a heavy toll on my mental health. It came as an unexpected and overwhelming shock to me.”
During her stint on the reality TV show, Lawson teamed up with Artem Chigvintsev and ended up in fourth position. However, she revealed during an episode that she faced a significant amount of bullying. When Burke expressed shock at this, Lawson disagreed with him.
She expressed, “I’m not sure if this is surprising or not. To some extent, I had anticipated it.” She made this comment after stating that she had assumed the audience of “Dancing With the Stars” would be more forgiving following the feedback she received from viewers on “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette”.
“Entering the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ community, I thought it would be a breeze. However, I was in for a surprise, as it turned out to be more challenging than both ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette.’ I began receiving threatening messages just for being there, criticized for not performing well enough, accused of arrogance, entitlement, and being the most unpleasant cast member. It’s astonishing how intense the backlash could be.”
Lawson shared that she was subjected to unpleasant remarks on her personal social media platform and the “Dancing With the Stars” page. Ultimately, she needed to confide in her dance partner, who then intervened by approaching the show’s executives for her protection.
“Lawson expressed that the constant negative comments were extremely harmful for her, night after night. She tried to filter them out on her own page but had no control over it on the show’s page. She had to share this harsh reality with Artem, explaining that unlike other contestants this season, she was subjected to such cruel remarks. All she could do was endure and be labeled as a ‘bitch’.”
Lawson became emotional during the interview, emphasizing that although she can only speak from her personal perspective, she felt it was crucial to highlight her unique challenges due to being both a Black woman and a participant in a reality TV show. She stated that the similar issues seem to go unprotected.
She went on saying, “I had no choice but to hold back, and it eventually became so difficult that I felt as if I was merely struggling to stay alive. Each week, I’d return home from rehearsal praying for mistakes, hoping they’d lead to my elimination… It was a very troubling time.”
On 25 different seasons of the ABC series, Burke pointed out that the video segments are a political aspect of the show’s production – an observation which Lawson concurred, explaining that during her interviews, she was merely responding to the producers’ questions.
As a cinephile discussing my film ratings, I found myself proudly sharing them due to your curiosity. However, it became aggravating when I noticed my reviews being portrayed in such a light; it seemed to subtly sway the audience into thinking, “She’s obsessed with scores” or “She thinks she’s superior.”
Towards the conclusion of the podcast, Lawson was queried about whether her racial background potentially influenced the result of “Dancing With the Stars.” She replied succinctly, “Indeed.”
