Channing Tatum Says Gambit Accent Was Supposed to Be ‘Unintelligible’ at Times and He Was ‘Too Scared to Ask’ Marvel for the Costume to Bring Home

As a fervent admirer of Channing Tatum‘s illustrious career and his unwavering dedication to his craft, I find myself deeply moved by his journey to bring the beloved character Gambit to life on the silver screen. It’s not every day that an artist pours their heart and soul into a role for over a decade, only to finally see their dreams realized in such an epic fashion.

After years of attempts and rejections, Channing Tatum eventually landed the role of superhero Gambit in “Deadpool & Wolverine”. This character holds immense significance for Tatum, as he expressed during a Vanity Fair video interview that he was hesitant to even ask if he could bring Gambit’s costume home after filming. Unlike other costumes he usually keeps, the one worn by Gambit remains on set.

“Tatum admitted, ‘I was too timid to inquire,’ and typically, I take the final costume from each film I’m in. Regrettably, I was also too afraid to do so on this occasion.'”

In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Gambit’s thick Cajun accent often serves as a humorous running gag, with Deadpool at one point quipping, “Who taught you to talk like that? The Minions?” However, Taylor Kitsch, who plays Gambit, defended the accent in an interview with Vanity Fair, stating that such criticism isn’t entirely fair since it was purposefully designed.

“Tatum shared with Access Hollywood that there wasn’t much improvisation in the movie, as the Cajun dialect is quite unique. Having been raised in Mississippi and having a father from New Orleans, he had been exposed to it but never used it before. There are specific phrases that are distinctly Cajun, and they aimed for it to be somewhat unclear, which was part of the humor.”

“Ryan requested not to hear anything during that take, so I cranked up my performance,” Tatum explained. “Sometimes he’d tell me he needed to comprehend what I was saying, though.”

Following the blockbuster success of “Deadpool & Wolverine” during its premiere weekend, Tatum expressed his heartfelt sentiments on social media about finally bringing Gambit to life on the silver screen.

“Initially, it seemed like Gambit was gone for good. However, [Reynolds] stepped up and fought for both me and Gambit. I’ll be indebted to him for a lifetime, as I can hardly imagine how I could repay such an invaluable gift. Buddy, I appreciate you so much…I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this movie. In my opinion, it’s nothing short of a masterpiece. It was pure exhilaration watching it unfold on the big screen. I was actually shouting with joy in the theater!”

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve always harbored a deep-seated desire to discuss a personal project that has been close to my heart for over a decade – the standalone Gambit film. You see, I’ve vocalized my longing for it since time immemorial, and now it rests in the capable hands of Bob Iger and Kevin Feige. In all honesty, I find myself appealing to a higher power, hoping that they will bring this cherished project to life.

As a true cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but share this exciting piece of information: Dive into Channing Tatum’s comprehensive interview, now available in the video below! And here’s another treat – catch “Deadpool & Wolverine” on screens across the country right now! Enjoy the show!
