Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon to Step Down

4 Channel has revealed that Alex Mahon has chosen to resign from her position as CEO and plans to depart the company during the summer months this year.

Mahon became the first female CEO of Channel 4 in the U.K. network back in 2017. During her leadership, Channel 4 has faced off against efforts to privatize it and significant changes in viewer preferences. Notably, it created groundbreaking shows like “It’s a Sin” and “Russell Brand: Dispatches.” Additionally, through Film4, it supported films such as “The Zone of Interest,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “All of Us Strangers,” and “Poor Things.”

Working at Channel 4 has been an unparalleled honor for me, as Channel 4 is an exceptionally unique organization. Here, we accomplish far more than just producing television – we mirror our nation through humor, creativity, tenacity, and compassion. Our goal is to defy expectations and redefine discussions, and we manage to do so with a distinctly unconventional brilliance that’s not found anywhere else, according to Mahon.

I am incredibly grateful to have steered Channel 4 for almost eight years, experiencing both tranquil periods (few) and turbulent times (more than expected). Overcoming privatization attempts on two occasions, relocating from London, digital modernization, lockdowns, political instability, ad industry turmoil – there was never a moment of boredom. However, amidst every curveball, one thing remained consistent: the exceptional talent, resilience, and ingenuity demonstrated by all my coworkers at Channel 4.

Channel 4’s COO, Jonathan Allan, is stepping up as the temporary CEO while the board conducts a search for a permanent replacement.

Alex is a significant influence in British television, having been one of the most influential CEOs since Channel 4 was established by Jeremy Isaacs over 42 years ago. She is both business-oriented and transformative, consistently demonstrating her exceptional talent for motivating and leading change that is positive and impactful. Under her guidance, Channel 4 has adapted to the changing times and often sets the pace for those changes,” stated Dawn Airey, Interim Chair of Channel 4.

She’s consistently dedicated to Channel 4’s public service objectives, championing captivating, thought-provoking, and occasionally controversial television. She’s never shied away from risk, instead tackling tough situations head-on with determination and tenacity.
