Mahon took over as the first female CEO of the U.K. network in 2017. Under her leadership, Channel 4 has fought off privatization attempts and adapted to major shifts in viewing habits. It has produced groundbreaking shows such as “It’s a Sin” and “Russell Brand: Dispatches,” and through Film4, it has backed films like “The Zone of Interest,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “All of Us Strangers,” and “Poor Things.

Mahon expressed that working at Channel 4 has been an exceptional honor due to the extraordinary nature of this organization. The tasks we undertake here go beyond just television; they mirror our nation with humor, creativity, determination, and compassion. We strive to defy norms and shift discussions, and we do so in a unique, unconventional manner that is hard to find elsewhere.

It’s hard to express just how fortunate I’ve felt for nearly eight years to guide Channel 4 – whether we sailed through tranquil waters or faced tempests. We’ve faced numerous challenges such as the threat of privatization, moving away from London, digital transformation, lockdowns, political instability, and advertising turmoil – there was never a moment of boredom. Yet, amidst every curveball, there’s always been something consistent: the exceptional talent, resilience, and ingenuity displayed by everyone at Channel 4.

In the meantime, Channel 4’s COO, Jonathan Allan, will temporarily take over as CEO while the board searches for a new permanent chief executive officer.

Alex is a highly influential figure in British television, standing out as one of the most impactful CEOs since the establishment of Channel 4 over 42 years ago by Jeremy Isaacs. She possesses strong business acumen and has made significant transformations, not just in terms of business, but also culturally and creatively. Her exceptional ability to inspire and bring about positive and substantial change is evident. Under her guidance, Channel 4 has consistently adapted to the times and even shaped them,” Dawn Airey, Interim Chair of Channel 4, commented.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’ve always stood firm in my commitment to the public service mission on Channel 4. I’ve supported shows that are captivating, thought-provoking, and even a bit daring – never shying away from the unconventional or the controversial. In these challenging times, my determination and resilience have been put to the test, but I’ve managed to rise above every obstacle that came my way.
