Chanel West Coast on Leaving ‘Ridiculousness’ After 30 Seasons to Create Her Own Work: I’m Not ‘Just the Girl That Laughs on a Couch’

As a longtime fan and admirer of Chanel West Coast, I can’t help but be thrilled for her as she embarks on this new chapter in her career. For years, she has been known for her infectious laugh on shows like “Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory” and “Ridiculousness,” but there is so much more to her than meets the eye.

Chanel West Coast has harbored a desire for her own television show for quite some time now. Although recognized for her infectious, distinctive laugh in 38 episodes of “Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory” and over 700 episodes of MTV’s “Ridiculousness,” she is eager to demonstrate that there’s much more to her than meets the eye.

“West Coast, 35, shares with EbMaster, ‘A frequent remark I’d come across was, “You’re merely the girl who laughs on a couch.” They fail to grasp my dedication beyond ‘Ridiculousness,” she admits. In addition to welcoming her daughter, Bowie Breeze, in 2022, West Coast is also a talented musician. Her true love lies in music, and she’s put in significant effort into her career. She’s embarked on two national tours, shared the stage with renowned artists like Lil’ Wayne and Cardi B, and accomplished numerous milestones in her independent music journey. Unfortunately, much of this has been overshadowed by ‘Ridiculousness.’ I can’t wait for people to recognize my hard work and achievements.”

After it was reported that she was departing from “Ridiculousness,” she made public her comprehensive agreement with Paramount. This contract encompassed the creation of a new reality series titled “The West Coast Hustle.” The premiere of this show will take place on MTV, with two consecutive episodes airing on July 18. These episodes will offer an insight into her role as a mother, partner, swimwear designer, and independent musician.

“For years, Chelsea Chanel Dudley, the TV personality, has been working on securing her own show. Despite creating over a million trailers, she hasn’t had much success. She then decided to take a break and gain some more experience. Initially, she felt uneasy about allowing full camera access as it seemed too intrusive.”

When MTV proposed this opportunity to her at an opportune moment, she recognized the benefits and enthusiastically agreed. For her, her partner Dom Fenison, and their child, MTV’s platform proved to be a compelling reason for acceptance.

“Growing up in LA, I’ve seen many privileged children around me. This experience made me understand the potential impact it could have on my own daughter’s future. Initially, I had reservations, but I believed there would be numerous benefits that would outweigh any doubts.”

Leaving “Ridiculousness,” the comedy clip show she joined in 2011 under Rob Dyrdek’s hosting, proved to be a challenging decision. According to her account, it was filled with tears, emotions, and mental turmoil. However, when she became a mother, she felt the moment had come for her to move on: “Balancing ‘Ridiculousness,’ motherhood, and my music career seemed almost impossible. Ultimately, music is what fuels my passion, and I was determined to advance it further.”

She faced difficulties allowing the cameras to record every aspect of her life. For instance, she found it hard to re-watch certain scenes due to her weight concerns. Following the birth of her child, she opted for liposuction, but she wasn’t satisfied with her appearance when filming commenced.

In full disclosure, it was quite challenging for me to re-watch myself during that period. My appearance didn’t meet my own standards – dealing with post-pregnancy bloating and carrying around 40-50 excess pounds. I’ve managed to shed all that weight since then. I wish I had been a bit more slender before filming the season, but now I’m content knowing that people can connect with my reality. I transitioned from being on a show where I was expected to look flawless at all times.

On her reality show, West Coast initially felt uneasy about not being able to maintain her glamorous appearance as she usually did when in front of the cameras.

She ponders, “Should I show myself on camera without makeup? I’m concerned it could harm my career. Perhaps I’ll miss out on acting opportunities if they see me looking like this.” But ultimately, she reflects, “I need to be true to myself… So, you’ll see me working out sans makeup. There I was in the pool with my baby, makeuptree. I was hungover, sans makeup as well. It wasn’t pretty!”

For the first time, she had complete control over all aspects of the project, deciding what was and wasn’t displayed. The camera crew had unrestricted access, yet her involvement in every discussion proved to be a significant shift.

Although she had been on 30 seasons of “Ridiculousness,” she never became an executive producer.

She expresses her regret at not being able to contribute more creatively to the show, which is run by Rob. Despite her abundance of ideas and creative abilities, she respects its ownership by Rob and prefers to stay out of his way. Grateful for the opportunities the show has given her, she values the importance of allowing others to take charge of their own projects.
