‘Challengers,’ ‘The Substance’ and ‘Wicked’ Land Costume Designers Guild Nominations: Full List

As a fashion enthusiast and film critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this year’s nominations for the Costume Designers Guild Awards are truly a spectacle to behold! The diversity and creativity showcased in these designs are nothing short of breathtaking.

The Costume Designers Guild has revealed the nominees for the 27th Costume Designers Guild Awards, featuring movies like “Wicked,” “Gladiator 2,” “Maria,” “Nosferatu,” and “Dune: Part Two” as some of the chosen titles.

In a competition for the best costuming, those who designed the attire for “The Book of Clarence”, “Gladiator II”, “Maria”, “Nosferatu” and “Saturday Night” (in period films) will strive for the highest honor, while the creators responsible for “Challengers”, “Conclave”, “Emilia Pérez”, “The Fall Guy” and “The Substance” (in contemporary films) will also contend.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share some news about Paul Tazewell, a name synonymous with exceptional costume design in the realm of sci-fi and fantasy films. This time, he’s been nominated in that very category, marking his fifth nod from the guild. Interestingly enough, he clinched his first victory back in 2021, in a different category – excellence in variety, reality-competition or live television, for none other than “Hamilton”.

In “Wicked,” Tazewell skillfully distinguished Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba from Ariana Grande’s Glinda through contrasting appearances. Initially, a radiant Glinda is shown floating above Munchkinland in a pink gown encased in a bubble. Conversely, when Elphaba makes her entrance, she’s dressed in black. This color contrast is maintained throughout the movie. Tazewell cleverly acknowledged both the original Broadway musical and “The Wizard of Oz” film by incorporating subtle references or hints, known as Easter eggs, into his costume designs.

Costume designer Janty Yates scored her fifth nomination from the guild for “Gladiator 2”, a recognition she’s received before, yet she’s still waiting to win at the guild. However, she did take home an Oscar in 2000, thanks to her work on “Gladiator”.

In the making of the sequel to the movie, she collaborated with David Crossman on designing the characters’ appearances. Her primary focus was on Denzel Washington’s character Macrinus and Connie Nielsen’s character Lucilla. For Washington’s portrayal of a wealthy power broker, she adorned him in luxurious fabrics like silk and accessorized him with jewelry.

In addition to the nominated costume designers are this year’s EbMaster creative impact in costume design awardee, Colleen Atwood for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Massimo Cantini Parrini for “Maria,” Linda Muir for “Nosferatu,” and Jonathan Anderson for “Challengers.” These individuals are among the nominees.

Anderson’s film costume design debut was ‘Challengers’. Known as the creative director of Loewe, Anderson also manages his own fashion label JW Anderson. In this project, he dressed his tennis characters (Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist) in popular tennis attire, including Juicy Couture zip-up hoodies, and even had Tashi (Zendaya) wear Chanel espadrilles while watching a match on the center court.

In the realm of television costume design, the nominees hail from shows such as “Baby Reindeer,” “Shogun,” “Dune Prophecy,” and “Agatha All Along.

Terry Gordon, president of the Costume Designers Guild (CDGA), expressed his excitement in congratulating this year’s nominees. He admired their exceptional creativity and dedication that continually raises the bar for costume design. He is eagerly anticipating celebrating your remarkable accomplishments at the upcoming event. Best of luck to each and every one of you!

On February 6th, the CDGA awards will unfold at The Ebell of Los Angeles. During this event, winners across nine distinct categories will be unveiled in real-time.

I’m thrilled to be part of the team that is once again sponsoring the prestigious 27th CDGA as a Premiere Sponsor. In the upcoming weeks, we’ll reveal who will be gracing the stage as the host, presenters, and other esteemed sponsors and honorees. Stay tuned!
