I was so thrilled to hear that Chadwick Boseman finally received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! The ceremony on Thursday was beautiful, and it meant so much to see so many of his friends and colleagues honor him. He gave us some truly incredible performances in films like Black Panther, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, 42, and Da 5 Bloods. It’s still hard to believe he’s gone – losing him to colon cancer in 2020 at just 43 was a devastating loss.
It was incredibly moving to see Chadwick Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward-Boseman, at the ceremony. And Viola Davis, who shared the screen with him in his last film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom – a performance that rightly earned him a posthumous Oscar nomination – delivered a particularly poignant speech. She confessed she simply couldn’t accept that he’s ‘gone,’ saying she has to believe he’s still with us, and found it impossible to even use the word ‘death’ when thinking about him. It was a beautiful, heartbreaking tribute.
Davis highlighted that Boseman’s legacy will live on, sharing how he personally inspired her. She explained that a person truly dies when the last person who remembers them is gone, and expressed gratitude for the lasting impact he had on her, describing it as a guiding force that elevates her work and sense of purpose.
While this star on the Walk of Fame is lovely, Chadwick Boseman’s impact and memory shine far more brilliantly now that he’s gone.
As a huge fan of his work, it was really moving to hear Ryan Coogler – the director of Black Panther and the short film Sinners – speak about Chadwick Boseman. He described Chadwick as someone who carried an incredible wisdom, almost like he’d lived for centuries. Coogler said Chadwick wasn’t just a star worthy of a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but something even more precious – a radiant light that reflected the best in all of us and showcased the beauty of our shared humanity.
See Coogler’s words at the Walk of Fame ceremony below:
It was really touching to see Chadwick’s co-stars from the MCU there – Letitia Wright and Michael B. Jordan were both present. Michael’s worked with Ryan Coogler a bunch of times, including on a film called Sinners. And it wasn’t just the actors; Chadwick’s wife, Simone Ledward-Boseman, gave the final speech, and his brothers, Derrick and Kevin, were right there with her to help unveil the star. Variety shared a sweet photo of Simone with Letitia and Michael, too.
In a moving tribute, Ledward-Boseman honored her husband, celebrating his life and work. She spoke of his incredible talent, dedication, and the lasting impact he had as a hero and icon. She described him as a person of honor, truthfulness, and exceptional kindness and beauty, adding, “We love you, we miss you, and we thank you.”
Adding Chadwick Boseman to the Wake of Fame honors his incredible work as a filmmaker and the profound effect he had on the people who knew him best.
