As a die-hard Boston Celtics fan who has watched these players grow and evolve over the years, I must say that NBA 2K25 has left me quite perplexed with some of their player ratings. While it’s understandable that fans might have disagreements, the ratings for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown seem to be a bit off-kilter, at least in my opinion.
For approximately three weeks, NBA 2K25 has been available, and this has given fans a chance to familiarize themselves with how their preferred characters execute within the newest version of the esteemed series.
Discussing legendary basketball teams, it’s anticipated that the Boston Celtics could be among the top contenders in the league this season. Given their strong lineup, they boast several highly-rated players. However, it’s possible that fans of the Celtics might find themselves at odds with the game creators over the ratings allotted to some of Boston’s standout performers.
Jayson Tatum’s 95 should be higher
Tatum is not only a top-tier performer, but also belongs to the rare group of genuine superstars in the league. His scoring ability spans across multiple levels and allows him to create shots whenever he chooses.
Apart from being an exceptional defensive player, he effortlessly handles defending positions from one to four. In case of necessity, his impressive height, power, and agility enable him to play at the center position as well.
In a conventional setting, Tatum is skilled at defending all positions effectively, demonstrating his versatility. However, he’s not just limited to this role – he can also thrive as a small-ball five for short spells. Tatum’s proficiency in ball handling and shooting sets him apart from most traditional centers, yet he can still hold his own when it comes to playing physically in the paint with the toughest opponents.
In smaller roles as a point guard, he usually leverages his skills by maneuvering defenders away from him, creating openings due to his quickness and playmaking prowess. This often results in a step-back jump shot that larger players struggle to challenge effectively.
Offensively, Tatum usually positions himself in front of the opposing player, aiming to stop the ball from reaching the inside zone entirely. Should his main assignment successfully obtain the ball, however, Tatum doesn’t panic. He employs his intuition and speed to make timely attempts at the ball, aiming to dislodge it. Moreover, he demonstrates exceptional skill in challenging shots for a player of his stature, employing a keen sense of angles and blocking techniques effectively, or at least causing disruptions to an opponent’s shots.
Tatum really should be at least a 92 or 93 on defense given his ability to make an impact all over the court. Offense is where he really shines, though. He should be at 98 and you could even make a case for 99 overall given his ability to score efficiently from anywhere on the floor.
Jaylen Brown’s 92 is egregiously low and borderline disrespectful
100% incorrect. This evaluation is disrespectful. If Tatum’s score may have some basis or reason, Brown’s mark is completely illogical. Upon seeing this rating, one can’t help but feel that the evaluators had a preconceived notion about their relative abilities – viewing Tatum as the Celtics’ top player with Brown as his sidekick, rather than vice versa. However, this perspective overlooks the actual hierarchy within the Celtics, and it shows disrespect towards both players, but especially towards Brown.
In a different light, he’s not merely an assistant; he’s a standout performer in his own league. If he were leading his team instead of being on the Celtics, there wouldn’t be much debate about his ability to achieve the same statistics as Tatum – he might even surpass him. However, as things currently stand, he consistently approaches Tatum’s level of production.
Brown truly excels in a defensive role. In fact, some argue that he could surpass Tatum in this aspect of the game. Initially, Brown was drafted not just for his scoring skills but primarily for his defensive prowess, which includes stifling opponents’ scoring attempts.
brown’s scores on each end should ideally exceed 95, and a total score ranging from 94 to 96 could be considered acceptable.
Kristaps Porzingis has had a nice career resurgence, but an 87 is a little high
Kristaps Porzingis has proven himself to be a top-notch basketball player, managing to turn around his career with the Celtics following the perception that he wasn’t living up to his draft potential. However, some might argue that his current ranking could be slightly inflated. While Porzingis has certainly improved and plays effectively, it seems possible that the game developers have been enthusiastic in portraying him as a comeback kid who battled obstacles to become a star.
His tale is truly inspiring, yet doesn’t quite reach stardom status. To be fair, this evaluation isn’t overly harsh, and there might be some logic behind it. However, it seems to be testing the limits of what Porzingis can achieve and showcasing his true talents a bit too much. A rating of 85 for Porzingis appears more suitable. Perhaps an 86 or even an 84 could be justified, but an 87 is slightly stretching things.
