Ah, Celo, the little blockchain that could… until it couldn’t. Today, it chucked its Layer 1 existence like a bad vodka shot 🍸 and crawled, whimpering, into the warm embrace of Ethereum Layer 2. The end of an era? Or just a clever bit of blockchain acrobatics? 🤔
This “move,” as they so delicately put it, was first whispered about by those Celo geeks at CLabs back in July 2023. Apparently, being a standalone chain was too much work. Too much responsibility. Much like me avoiding my chores. So they decided to hitch their wagon to Ethereum’s star, hoping to bask in its reflected glory (and security, I suppose). Using the OP Stack from Optimism, they transformed Celo into an optimistic rollup – because why not? 🤷♂️
The supposed benefits? Faster transactions than a greased piglet at a county fair 🐷💨! Cheaper fees than a politician’s promise 🤑! And seamless integration with Ethereum – because who wants to mess with bridges when you can just… not? Aave, Fireblocks, Uniswap, and Yellowcard are already on board, like happy little lemmings following the Pied Piper of Ethereum. And the block times? Down from a leisurely 5 seconds to a lightning-fast 1 second! Impressive! 👏
But (They probably deserve a raise, too.) 😅
