Celine Song’s ‘Materialists,’ Starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, Sets June Release Date

Celine Song’s highly-anticipated follow-up to her Oscar-nominated directorial debut “Past Lives,” titled “Materialists,” has received a U.S. release date from A24. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters across the nation on June 13th, which might fuel speculation that A24 could be aiming for a world premiere at Cannes a month prior.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that “Materialists” is a project penned, steered, and brought to life by the talented Song, in collaboration with David Hinojosa of 2AM and Killer Films, who also backed his previous work, “Past Lives”. This upcoming romantic comedy features the captivating trio of Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. The story revolves around a driven New York City matchmaker, who faces a challenging dilemma when she’s caught between her seemingly perfect new match and her imperfect, yet significant ex.

In the case of “Past Lives,” the production team comprises Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler from Killer Films, along with Hinojosa from 2AM.

Following its premiere at Sundance in 2023, the debut feature film “Past Lives” by Song, featuring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro, gained significant attention throughout the year as it delved into the long-term friendship of two individuals. This film served to highlight Song as a promising new talent in cinematography. The film was later distributed by A24, ultimately appearing on numerous “best of” lists, garnering five Golden Globe nominations, three BAFTA nominations, and nods for both best picture and best original screenplay at the Oscars. It eventually grossed over $42 million worldwide.

Previously, it was disclosed that the movie “Eddington,” produced by A24 and directed by Ari Aster, was intending to make its premiere at Cannes and hit theaters this summer. This electrifying thriller features a star-studded cast including Pascal, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler. The story centers around a small-town sheriff in New Mexico who harbors lofty aspirations.
