CD Projekt explained why there is no Yennefer and Ciri in The Witcher 1 and 2. „It would be a waste”

The video content produced by our friends at tvgry YouTube channel, GryOnline, GameStar, for the 10th anniversary of The Witcher 3 is filled with fascinating insights. During their discussions, the developers from CD Projekt RED shared various topics, including Yennefer‘s unique appearance in the opening scene and the shock they experienced due to the massive popularity of the game.

The video additionally focused on a noteworthy aspect, which is: One of the creators shared the reasons behind the introduction of the main characters for Geralt’s tale – Yennefer and Ciri – in the third part of the series.

“That would be a waste”

To begin with, you should be aware that initially, the first Witcher game didn’t originally plan to include Geralt as a character. Later on, when the White Wolf took center stage, it turned out there was insufficient room to adequately introduce both Ciri and Yennefer.

According to Marcin Blacha’s confession, the narrative wasn’t suited for including those particular characters, as doing so might have squandered their potential. Consequently, CD Projekt RED opted to hold off until a more fitting opportunity presented itself.

It seems that a suitable chance to include characters like Ciri and Yennefer will present itself when creating the sequel of the game, initially conceived with Geralt as the central figure. Regrettably, this didn’t materialize – once again, these characters were excluded in Assassins of Kings for the same reasons that applied in the first installment.

In the second edition of “The Witcher”, the narrative veered off towards an entirely distinct topic; including characters like Yennefer or Ciri at that point would have been unnecessary and inappropriate.

Conversely, as they embarked on developing The Wild Hunt, the creators had already decided to incorporate Ciri into the game. This decision, in turn, made room for Yennefer as well.

We gave them the recognition they deserved and made room for them to shine as great characters.
