CBS is officially greenlighting a new series in the “FBI” franchise focused on CIA agents.
Tom Ellis has been cast as one of the principal characters for the upcoming drama series, currently known as “CIA.” The show is scheduled to debut during the television season from 2025 to 2026.
The production of the show was initially announced in January, with initial plans for it to debut as a spin-off within an existing episode of “FBI,” featuring new characters.
We heard about this show being made way back in January. At first, they wanted to introduce it as a spin-off during an episode of FBI’s current season, with new characters appearing.
The official logline states:
One Hour Crime Thriller – ‘CIA’: A Duo’s Dance”
Sub A dynamic duo, an unconventional CIA agent Ellis and a strict FBI agent, join forces at the CIA’s New York Station to tackle domestic threats. While they initially clash due to their contrasting methods, they eventually discover that their differences might just be what makes them unbeatable.
Casting for the remaining roles is ongoing.
This series originates from the pens of writers Dick Wolf, David Hudgins, Nicole Perlman, and David Chasteen, serving as executive producers. In particular, David Hudgins takes on the role of showrunner, while Peter Jankowski will also join them in the executive producer position. Similar to other shows within the “FBI” series, “CIA” is produced by Universal Television, in collaboration with Wolf Entertainment and CBS Studios.
The news about the revival of “FBI” has surfaced recently, around two months after the announcement that “FBI: Most Wanted” and “FBI: International” were canceled at CBS. Currently, “FBI” is airing its first season following a three-season renewal it secured in 2024.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve been thrilled to see CBS taking strides in expanding their beloved franchises recently. They’re cooking up quite a few projects at the moment, including a “The Equalizer” spinoff featuring Titus Welliver and Juani Feliz, as well as a spinoff of the multi-camera comedy “The Neighborhood”, starring Marcel Spears and Sheaun McKinney. Notably, they’ve greenlit the “Fire Country” spinoff titled “Sheriff Country,” and another for “Blue Bloods” called “Boston Blue.” It’s an exciting time to be a CBS fan!
Ellis shines brightest for his role in the television show “Lucifer,” a series inspired by the DC Comics character, the Darkness’s royalty incarnate. Initially aired on Fox, it ran for three seasons before its termination, only to be continued on Netflix with an additional three seasons. His other TV appearances encompass the Hulu series “Tell Me Lies” and the popular British sitcom “Miranda.” Upcoming projects see him sharing screen time with Sterling K. Brown in the forthcoming Hulu miniseries “Washington Black.
He is repped by CAA, Hamilton Hodell, Anonymous Content and Johnson, Shapiro, Slewett & Kole.
