CBS’ Latest Y: Marshals Video Has Me Flashing Back To Luke Grimes Telling Me His Hopes For Kayce, And I Bet He’s A Happy Camper Now

Next year, CBS will launch the new series *Y: Marshals*, a spin-off focusing on Kayce Dutton from *Yellowstone*. The show will follow Kayce as he puts his military training to use in his work, and it might also reveal more about his background. Luke Grimes mentioned a year ago that he’d like to see Kayce’s past explored further, and recent previews of the show suggest that could happen. I’m especially excited about the possibility of learning more about his history.

Although *Y: Marshals* won’t be released until 2025, the new *Yellowstone* series is still on track to premiere in early 2026. To build excitement, Entertainment Tonight just released a first look at the spinoff. Check it out!

Kayce mentions he’s starting fresh and pursuing a different direction. Interestingly, his new work will still utilize the skills he developed during his time in the military. This made me reflect on a previous discussion with Grimes about Kayce’s past – specifically, parts of his history that weren’t shown on *Yellowstone*.

Earlier in 2024, before the release of the second part of *Yellowstone*’s fifth season, I spoke with Luke Grimes about his work with Carhartt. Our conversation also naturally turned to the show’s ending. Having recently watched *1883* and *1923*, I was particularly interested in the Dutton family’s history, which is often shown through flashbacks in *Yellowstone*. I asked Grimes what he hoped to see if Kayce’s backstory was further developed, and he shared his thoughts:

Kayce’s experiences in the Special Forces are the most compelling part of his character, in my opinion. It’s clear that time overseas deeply affected him, and he’s been struggling with the aftermath, likely PTSD, as the show has hinted at. Exploring those experiences and understanding how they shaped him could be really interesting.

I’ve always been interested in learning more about Kayce’s history, and I was disappointed that *Yellowstone* never explored it. It sounds like *Y: Marshals* might finally do that, as the show’s description suggests it will delve into his past, showing how his experience as both a cowboy and a Navy SEAL helps him enforce the law in Montana.

I spoke with the actor and we discussed how Kayce’s past isn’t explored much on *Yellowstone*. Unlike characters like Rip and Beth, who had many flashback scenes, Kayce’s history is rarely shown, as the actor explained.

The most significant part of his past seems to be the death of his mother. He’s faced a lot of difficulties from a young age, but underneath it all, he’s a genuinely good person who’s just had a tough life.

Okay, let’s talk Paramount+. If you’re a fan of the *Yellowstone* universe – and let’s be honest, a lot of us are – you’ll need this streaming service. While the original *Yellowstone* isn’t *on* Paramount+, all the spin-offs, current and upcoming, are. So, if you’re eager to watch *Y: Marshals* when it drops, a subscription – starting at just $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year – is the way to go. Plus, you get access to the rest of Taylor Sheridan’s impressive lineup, including shows like *Landman*, *Lioness*, and *Mayor of Kingstown*. Definitely worth considering if you’re invested in that world.

Throughout the main series, available on Peacock, Kayce’s time in the military was frequently mentioned. But we never actually saw what it was like, or learned any specifics about his experiences.

The new show *Y: Marshals*, coming to CBS and Paramount+, could be a game-changer. Based on what Luke Grimes told me over a year ago, he’s excited about the chance to further develop his character, Kayce, and so am I.
