CBS is playing around with the concept of space and time in their programming: Their new drama “Einstein,” which was initially slated for next season but recently given a green light, will now be delayed until the year after.
The show starring Matthew Gray Gubler, initially commissioned as a pilot in August 2024, won’t premiere until two years later, specifically during the 2026-2027 television season. According to CBS, there wasn’t enough space for “Einstein” within the upcoming 2025-2026 TV schedule.
Executive teams are currently finalizing the lineup for next television season, and will reveal their fall 2025 plans at a press conference on May 7th. It’s rumored that CBS executives have determined that there isn’t sufficient space in the schedule for “Einstein,” and that the show could potentially gain from an extended pre-production phase.
Here’s a more conversational way to present the information:
For the upcoming season, we have several new shows lined up including spin-offs of “Blue Bloods” titled “Boston Blue,” “Fire Country” becoming “Sheriff Country,” and an extension of “FBI” called “FBI:CIA.”
As for returning series, we’ve got “Elsbeth,” “FBI,” “Fire Country,” “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” “Ghosts,” “Matlock,” “NCIS,” “NCIS: Origins,” “NCIS: Sydney,” “The Neighborhood,” “Tracker” and “Watson.”
However, we must bid farewell to a few shows such as “Blue Bloods,” “FB: International,” “FBI: Most Wanted,” “Poppa’s House” and “SWAT.
It remains uncertain how this delay could impact “The Equalizer,” the final CBS scripted show hanging in the balance.
This year, networks such as CBS are adopting a more relaxed approach to both developing and launching new shows, as evidenced by their recent choice to postpone certain series premieres. For instance, last season, they decided to air “Sheriff Country” as late as the 2025-26 season, despite giving it an early greenlight.
Additionally, during the latest Hollywood writers’ strikes, some networks such as NBC chose to delay airing scripted content (referred to as “strike-contingency fare”). This was done with the expectation that if there were future interruptions in production, CBS would be prepared with the TV show “Einstein” ready to air in 2026.
In a style reminiscent of a German narrative, “Einstein” is a dramatic series about a gifted yet aimless great-grandson of Albert Einstein. He spends his days as a comfortably established university professor until he finds himself in legal trouble and is compelled to assist a local detective in resolving various cases.
In this production, Gubler portrays Lewis Einstein, a character who possesses a unique talent for resolving homicide mysteries. This ability might provide Einstein with a sense of direction in his life. Meanwhile, Rosa Salazar plays Veronica “Ronni” Paris, a diligent and focused detective from the New Jersey State Police.
The television series “Einstein” is overseen by executive producers Andy Breckman, Tariq Jalil, Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia, Laura Beetz, and director Randy Zisk.
Initially, “Einstein” began as a TV movie in 2015, featuring Tom Beck (“Alarm for Cobra 11”), penned by Martin Ritzenhoff and Matthias Dinter. Later on, these writers transformed it into a series under Zeitsprung Pictures, running successfully for three seasons. The series was subsequently distributed to more than 100 territories worldwide.
For several years, plans have been underway to adapt a series inspired by Einstein’s life. Attempts were made by Michael Reisz and Carol Mendelsohn for NBC in 2018, followed by Breckman and Zisk for CBS in 2019, but neither of these versions came to fruition. The Network also attempted a gender-swapped version in 2020 from Lauren Gussis and Corinne Brinkerhoff, but this attempt was unsuccessful as well.
