As a huge fan of Bob Newhart and his iconic comedy, I was absolutely thrilled to see the overwhelming success of “Bob Newhart: A Legacy of Laughter,” the recent Entertainment Tonight special paying tribute to the late legend. With over 4.1 million viewers tuning in on CBS, it was not only the most-watched program in its time slot but also the biggest-ever ET special to date!
“On Monday, a special episode of “Entertainment Tonight” titled “Bob Newhart: A Lasting Laugh” honoring the late comedy legend drew in 4.1 million viewers on CBS.”
Among all programs aired at 8 p.m., it drew the largest audience, outperforming “American Ninja Warrior” (2.7 million viewers on NBC), “The Bachelorette” (2.6 million viewers on ABC), and “Name That Tune” (1.4 million viewers on Fox), as well as beating out all other non-sports programming for the night with the highest viewership.
The Newhart tribute drew more viewers than any previous “Entertainment Tonight” special, surpassing the 3.8 million who tuned in for “NCISVerse: The First 1000” back in April. The third and fourth most-watched ET specials were “Salute to NCIS: LA,” which was seen by 3.4 million viewers in May 2023, and “Norman Lear: A Life on TV,” with 3.1 million viewers in December 2023.
Nischelle Turner hosted the retrospective special “Bob Newhart: A Lasting Laugh,” which delved into Newhart’s seven-decade long career. The show included previously unreleased footage from his movies and sitcoms, as well as his final interview. Additionally, it included new and old interviews with colleagues and friends such as Jim Parsons, Will Ferrell, Reese Witherspoon, Jason Bateman, and Michael Weatherly.
“CBS Media Ventures produces ‘Entertainment Tonight,’ which is hosted by Turner and Kevin Frazier. Rachel Smith, Cassie DiLaura, and Denny Directo contribute as correspondents. Erin Johnson holds the role of executive producer, while Whitney Wallace and Leslie Kawaguchi share the position of co-executive producers.”
Renowned for his roles in “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Newhart,” along with more contemporary projects such as “Elf” and “The Big Bang Theory,” Newhart passed away on July 18 at the age of 94.
