Channel 4’s alternative Christmas message in the UK is traditionally meant to be thought-provoking, surprising, and sometimes a little cheeky. But this year, it felt like a rerun of American late-night complaints, delivered by someone who seems to mostly express anger and sadness for effect.
This list comes from my reporting on the entertainment industry this year, combined with insights from three of my colleagues at Vulture: Roxana Hadadi, Nick Quah, and Kathryn VanArendonk. We discussed what worked and what didn’t with these platforms over the last year, considering both our expert opinions and what we’ve seen from people outside the industry—including whether they’re even paying attention. After a lot of discussion, we reached a consensus and created a list that accurately reflects the state of the industry this year.
Joachim Rønning, 119 minutes
After more than two decades, Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick are reunited on screen in The Best You Can, but the film doesn’t quite live up to expectations. While the romantic comedy tries a fresh take on familiar tropes with its older lead characters and features some genuinely heartwarming scenes, the story feels somewhat disjointed and lacks focus.
Netflix has a history of cancelling shows after just one or two seasons. They often explain this by saying the show wasn’t cost-effective or didn’t attract enough viewers, particularly if many people stopped watching before finishing a season. However, it looks like , with its perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, might be an exception to this pattern, offering hope that more good series won’t be cut short.
Next year is shaping up to be huge for Hollywood franchises. Fans can anticipate the return of popular series like Avengers and Spider-Man, plus a new Supergirl film. Families will enjoy the latest Toy Story and Minions movies, along with a live-action Moana remake. And for science fiction enthusiasts, Dune: Part 3 and a brand new Star Wars movie – the first in seven years – are on the horizon.
