I was so shocked and saddened to hear about James Van Der Beek. His family announced he passed away this morning, February 11th. He’d been bravely sharing his battle with colorectal cancer for the past year, and it’s just heartbreaking to hear this news.

Highguard made a big splash when it was first revealed at The Game Awards 2025. After the initial excitement, however, there was a long period of no news, leading some to worry the game might be cancelled. Fortunately, on January 26th, Highguard was released on PC and consoles as a free-to-play game, making it accessible to everyone.
It’s been a little over two weeks since the game Highguard launched, and reports are surfacing that developers at the California studio are being laid off. While the exact number of affected employees isn’t known, one person who lost their job says the cuts impact “most of the team.”
