‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ Returns with a Bold New Anime from Nier: Automata’s Yoko Taro – First Teaser Drops

The news was revealed at the Evangelion:30+ event in Yokohama, Japan, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of the popular franchise. The three-day festival featured exhibits, discussions, a kabuki performance, and a new 15-minute anime short starring Asuka Langley. According to reports, this anime is being marketed as a brand-new series, distinct from earlier versions and movies.

Evangelion Didn’t Need Another Series, But I Believe in Yoko Taro

Neon Genesis Evangelion began as an unusual anime about teenagers piloting giant robots to battle bizarre alien creatures. It gained popularity for its in-depth look at its characters’ minds, its exploration of difficult themes like depression, and a famously confusing final episode that left many questions unanswered. Over time, it expanded into a larger franchise with video games, films, merchandise, and even a recent reboot.

New Neon Genesis Evangelion Anime Has Been Officially Announced

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a beloved and enduring anime franchise. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, a special three-day festival was held at the Yokohama Arena in Japan, featuring appearances by creator Hideaki Anno, from February 21st to 23rd, 2026. While the festival included many exciting announcements, the biggest news was the confirmation of a brand new Evangelion anime series. This announcement was a fitting conclusion to the 30th-anniversary celebrations for this iconic anime.

Japanese Fans Hated This 97% Rotten Tomatoes Shonen Anime For Breaking All The Rules (And It’s Not Evangelion)

The series excels because it deliberately avoids typical heroic tropes. By discarding the “Chosen One” narrative, author Tatsuki Fujimoto has created a world where death feels genuinely shocking and isn’t presented as a glorious sacrifice. No character is protected by a tragic past or a striking appearance. This rejection of traditional shonen conventions creates a constant sense of dread; even quiet moments feel ominous, like the calm before a violent storm.

An Evangelion/Transformers Crossover Has Been Announced

A unique collaboration is coming this October: an action figure that combines Optimus Prime from Transformers with Unit-01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Called the “Transformers x Evangelion Synergenex Series Evangelion Prime Unit-01,” this figure will retail for approximately $85 USD. It’s a surprising team-up that blends the iconic designs of both franchises. The figure features Optimus Prime’s form with Unit-01’s signature purple and green color scheme and reimagined accessories. Takara Tomy describes it as the ultimate fusion of two epic franchises. You can see images of the combined figure here.
