Cate Blanchett Says ‘No One Got Paid Anything’ to Film ‘Lord of the Rings’: ‘I Basically Got Free Sandwiches’

As a film enthusiast with a keen eye for behind-the-scenes happenings and a deep respect for the hard work that goes into making our favorite movies, I find it disheartening to learn about the financial struggles faced by some of the most talented actors during the production of blockbuster films. Cate Blanchett‘s recent revelation that she didn’t earn much from the iconic “Lord of the Rings” trilogy is a stark reminder of the often overlooked reality of Hollywood.

“The Lord of the Rings” movie series is among the highest-earning films ever made, raking in approximately $2.9 billion globally. However, as Cate Blanchett points out, this success doesn’t automatically equate to substantial actor paychecks for their roles in Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

On a Tuesday evening, as I tuned into “Watch What Happens Live”, our beloved host, Andy Cohen, posed an intriguing question to the illustrious Cate Blanchett: “What film has brought you the largest paycheck?” With a sparkle in her eyes, she mused, “I believe it’s most likely ‘The Lord of the Rings’.”

“Are you kidding me?” Blanchett replied. “No, no one got paid anything to do that movie.”

When Cohen enquired whether Blanchett had acquired some “back-end deal,” she responded, “Absolutely not! That was long before all that ever transpired. No, I haven’t.”

She mentioned that she wished to collaborate with the person behind the 1992 zombie comedy movie titled “Braindead,” known as “Dead Alive” in North America.

Cate Blanchett played Galadriel, a mighty elf with magical powers from Middle-Earth, in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. This esteemed actor, who has won an Oscar, returned to her role in Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” movie series, which serves as a prequel to “The Lord of the Rings.”

“Blanchett mentioned that she essentially received sandwiches for free, and as a bonus, she got to retain her ‘Lord of the Rings’ character’s elf ears in her payment.”

She later said, “Women don’t get paid much as you think they do.”
