Carrie Coon is widely admired for her performances in HBO shows like “The Leftovers,” “The Gilded Age,” and “The White Lotus” Season 3, and her talent extends to the big screen as well. A brief interlude in her career took her into the Marvel universe, where she voiced and motion-captured the character Proxima Midnight for the 2018 film “Avengers: Infinity War.” Unfortunately, she did not reprise her role in “Avengers: Endgame.” According to Coon’s husband, playwright and actor Tracy Letts, who discussed this on the “The Big Picture” podcast (as reported by People), money was the primary factor behind her decision to leave Marvel.
In an interview for a podcast, Letts stated that Marvel approached her for the sequel and requested her involvement. However, she inquired if they would compensate her better since the first film was the highest-grossing movie ever made. Regrettably, they replied that there would be no increase in payment.
He added, “She responded, ‘If I’m not getting any more payment, I’m not sure I’ll participate.’ They countered with, ‘You should consider yourself lucky to be part of the Marvel Universe.’ However, she opted out… We would have given it more attention, but it would have meant watching the movies, and we chose not to do that.
EbMaster reached out to Marvel for comment.
It’s astounding that “Infinity War” raked in over $2 billion at global box offices when it debuted in late April 2018, making it the top-earning film of that year. The sequel, “Endgame,” surpassed this figure with an impressive $2.7 billion worldwide the following year. Remarkably, Letts mentioned on a podcast that he and Coon have yet to watch either Marvel movie.
2018 found me conversing with Entertainment Weekly while the grand spectacle of “Infinity War” graced the big screen. In this chat, I shared my journey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which unexpectedly began as an audition for a voiceover role – specifically, Proxima Midnight’s voice. They might have approached me because they appreciated my vocal talents or perhaps due to my past experience with motion-capture work. You see, in my college days, I dabbled in motion-capture work for video games right here in Madison, Wisconsin. My athletic background made this highly physical task an absolute delight, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
She went on to say, ‘I’m significantly older now compared to back then, which made the encounter quite distinct.’ At that time, she was pregnant as well. She traveled to Atlanta for motion capture work, focusing mainly on facial expressions. While I can’t claim all the credit, it’s a talented group of animators who are primarily responsible for the performance. Initially, it was just a voiceover job, but it evolved into motion capture work. Then, suddenly, I found myself in the highest-grossing film of the year.
Currently, Coon is featured in “The White Lotus” Season 3, which concludes on April 6. Later this year, you can catch her again on HBO during the third season of “The Gilded Age.
