yet another well-known Hollywood actor signs up for ‘s eagerly awaited movie: Carey Mulligan, a three-time Academy Award nominee, has become the most recent big name to join the cast of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ “The Magician’s Nephew,” which is one of the Narnia series’ early installments.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to announce that Saoirse Ronan has signed up for the illustrious ensemble of The Magician’s Nephew, joining heavyweights like Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig, and Emma Mackey. Ronan, renowned for her captivating performances in Maestro, Promising Young Woman, and An Education – each earning her an Oscar nomination – has been keeping busy with a series of impressive big-screen roles. These include the critically acclaimed black comedy thriller Saltburn, the Adam Sandler-led sci-fi drama Spaceman, and the hilarious British comedy yet to be named.
In a natural and easy-to-understand way, “The Magician’s Nephew” – the sixth book in C.S. Lewis’ “Narnia” series – serves as a prequel to “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, which was successfully adapted into Disney’s first Narnia movie trilogy. This captivating novel tells the story of two London children at the turn of the 20th century who inadvertently release the malevolent White Witch due to their uncle’s dabbling in magic. “The Magician’s Nephew” is directed and written by Greta Gerwig, renowned for her Oscar-nominated works such as “Lady Bird”, “Little Women”, and most recently, “Barbie”. The film production involves Amy Pascal, who was just appointed the new producer of the James Bond franchise, along with Mark Gordon and Vincent Sieber.
During the ongoing search for the young leads, the principal roles for the adaptation of “The Magician’s Nephew” have already been decided. Mulligan will take on the role of Digory’s ailing mother, while Craig is set to embody his magic-enamored uncle. Lastly, Streep has been chosen to lend her voice to Aslan, the renowned lion and King of Kings in the Narnia series.
The Magician’s Nephew Lands an IMAX Debut
In addition to its premiere on streaming platforms, the film will also have an IMAX release, which is unusual for a Netflix movie and something that director Greta Gerwig actively advocated for. The IMAX screening is scheduled for Thanksgiving Day of the following year (November 26, 2026). This simultaneous theatrical and streaming release shortens the time between its cinema run and online debut, thereby enhancing its box office potential.
Although she initially felt apprehensive about working on the Narnia films, she was captivated by the rich folklore and intriguing worlds depicted in C.S. Lewis’ novels. Her aim is to replicate the success of Disney’s Narnia trilogy, which includes adaptations of Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and together they generated over $1.5 billion at the global box office.
The Magician’s Nephew premieres via Netflix on Dec. 25, 2026.
