Caravan SandWitch Dev Marked Post-Launch Milestone, Surpassing Concord's All-Time Player Peak

As a longtime gaming enthusiast with a soft spot for indie titles that dare to tread where AAA games fear to go, I must say, I find myself utterly captivated by the audacity of Firewalk Studios and their game Caravan SandWitch. The post-launch success they’ve achieved, surpassing even the all-time peak players of Concord, is a testament to their unique approach and the appeal that lies within their ominous exploration adventure.

planeToast’s exploration game titled Caravan Sandwich has just had a triumphant debut on consoles and computers this month, inviting players to delve into a mystifying journey through its sci-fi Provence-esque world. Players have been exploring the expanse of Cigalo in their camper van, attempting to unravel an intriguing enigma, while the developer reached an exciting milestone – albeit at the cost of a recent mishap with Sony.

In early this month, Ryan Ellis, Game Director at Firewalk Studios, announced via the PlayStation Blog that their live-service FPS shooter Concord will be shut down starting from September 6th, 2024. All players will receive a full refund. Interestingly, Caravan SandWitch’s developer compared their game’s all-time peak player count with that of Concord, a comparison they shared on social media.

In a chilling journey, Caravan SandWitch’s main character traverses the desolate landscape of Cigalo, propelled by the enigma surrounding the disappearance of their sibling. Each move reveals another layer of mystery. The game is captivating due to its focus on exploration, allowing players to roam the post-apocalyptic world either on foot or within their camper van. This straightforward approach seems to be resonating with gamers.

Well guess what, we got an higher all time player peak than Concord!!!!!

The developer celebrated the game’s accomplishments following its release, by posting on Twitter not too long ago. This could be perceived as a bit of a jab, given the context. To clarify, the developer compared the highest concurrent player statistics on Steam DB for Caravan SandWitch and Concord from their launch dates until September 16th, 2024.

At the moment when the tweet was posted, Concord had peaked at 697 players, compared to Caravan SandWitch’s 756 players, as stated in the mentioned Twitter post. This was later echoed in another related post that said, “‘Something something… the focus wasn’t exactly on what everyone thought it was,’” indicating that while many were discussing a certain topic, the posts underscored the importance and popularity of independent game studios and publishers. However, these discussions also pointed out how executive issues potentially hindered Concord’s growth and success.

Despite the potential perception of disrespect or criticism due to the context surrounding Concord’s marketing and launch, the developer responded to a critic by clarifying that their comment was not meant to ridicule. They acknowledged the team at Firewalk Studios for their excellent work and praised the workers as well. However, they attributed Concord’s failure to executive-level issues.
