Captain Atom Explained – What the Potential New DCU’s Hero Means for the Franchise’s Future

Okay, so the DCU rumor mill is spinning again, and this one’s a biggie! Word on the street is that Captain Atom – a seriously powerful hero in the comics – could be playing a key role in the second season of Creature Commandos. Now, let’s be real, nothing’s confirmed until James Gunn gives us the official nod. We just saw how he handled the Brainiac casting – a little denial, then boom, it’s happening! So, while it’s not a done deal, I’m definitely intrigued by the possibility of Captain Atom joining the party.

Most fans recognize Captain Atom from his appearance in the popular Justice League Unlimited series. However, his comic book backstory is complex and suggests he could become a troubled anti-hero, or even a major villain, potentially forcing heroes like Superman and the Creature Commandos to team up. This could even lead to the creation of groups like The Authority and the Justice League. Here’s a look at Captain Atom’s history and what his role might be in the future of the DC Universe.

Who Is Captain Atom?

DC Comics

Captain Atom first appeared in Space Adventures #33 in March 1960, created by Joe Gill and Steve Ditko for Charlton Comics. Originally named Allen Adams, he was a rocket technician with incredible abilities – he could control matter, time, and atoms, and was also immortal and capable of changing his size. This initial version of the character later served as a key inspiration for Doctor Manhattan in Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen.

After the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event in 1987, DC Comics reintroduced and reimagined Captain Atom, similar to what they did with other characters they’d obtained from Charlton Comics. Created by Cary Bates, Greg Weisman, and Pat Broderick, the updated Captain Atom first appeared in Captain Atom vol. 3 #1 in March 1987. He was originally Nathanal Adams, an Air Force pilot during the Vietnam War who volunteered for a dangerous experiment in exchange for a pardon for a crime he didn’t commit. This experiment gave him a metallic skin containing incredible atomic powers, but also accidentally sent him forward in time, transforming him into the hero known as Captain Atom.

The look of Captain Atom in DC Comics was strongly inspired by Doctor Manhattan, creating a cyclical connection since Doctor Manhattan was originally based on the earlier version of Captain Atom. More recent DC stories, like the 2024 series Jenny Sparks, have emphasized this connection by portraying Captain Atom as developing a god complex, mirroring the behavior of Doctor Manhattan from Watchmen.

Captain Atom is a unique character in the DC Universe because he serves both as a Justice League member and an Air Force operative, frequently creating internal conflict regarding where his true allegiance lies – a dynamic explored in Justice League Unlimited. Originally, DC Comics planned to reveal Captain Atom as the villainous Monarch in the Armageddon 2001 storyline. However, when details of this twist were prematurely revealed, the story was altered at the last minute, and Monarch was instead established as a future version of Hawk. Later DC comics have revisited the idea of Captain Atom becoming the villainous Monarch. This blurring of the line between hero and villain makes Captain Atom a compelling and potentially impactful addition to the DCU, with the potential to significantly shape the franchise’s future.

How Captain Atom Could Fit Into the DCU

DC Comics

Rumors suggest Captain Atom will appear in Season 2 of Creature Commandos. There are a couple of ways this could happen. One possibility is that the government, recognizing Captain Atom’s military background, puts him in charge of the Creature Commandos, potentially creating conflict with existing team members like Bride, Doctor Phospherous, and Weasel. Another idea is that showrunner James Gunn might explore a concept originally planned for a Suicide Squad sequel before he took over. That earlier plan involved the Suicide Squad hunting a dangerous weapon – ultimately revealed to be Black Adam. A similar storyline could be used for Creature Commandos Season 2, with Captain Atom as the hidden weapon and the Creature Commandos taking the place of the Suicide Squad.

Captain Atom could help connect to the currently delayed DC Universe project, The Authority. Announced in January 2023, The Authority has faced setbacks, despite María Gabriela de Faría portraying the Engineer in Superman. Captain Atom was central to the 2024 Jenny Sparks miniseries, and Jenny Sparks is a core member of The Authority. A series focused on Captain Atom could be a good way to introduce both Jenny Sparks and the Engineer, setting up the formation of the superhero team.

James Gunn has suggested the DC Animated Universe inspired his vision for the DCU, potentially pointing to a significant role for Captain Atom. Known for a famous battle with Superman orchestrated by the US government in the popular “Cadmus” storyline, Captain Atom could be reintroduced in live-action. This might lead to a showdown between the two heroes, with the government possibly using Captain Atom to control and imprison metahumans in the interdimensional prison, Salvation – a location seen in the finale of Peacemaker Season 2.

These developments could result in Captain Atom transforming into the villain Monarch. Additionally, James Gunn might combine storylines from Armageddon 2001 and Salvation Run into a single narrative. Both Captain Atom and his Monarch alter ego are incredibly powerful, posing a threat large enough to bring together heroes from the Justice League or even the Authority. This character also offers a compelling internal conflict – torn between his own desires and his obligations – allowing the franchise to explore what truly defines a hero, and whether Captain Atom is fated to become a villain, or if he has the power to change his destiny and become a true superhero.

It’s currently uncertain what role Captain Atom will have in the new DC Universe, but all signs suggest he’s being considered. He’d be a fantastic addition to the team, especially as a government-backed hero who differs significantly from Superman. This would give James Gunn a compelling character with the potential to be either a true hero or a major villain. Bringing Captain Atom into the DCU would add to the universe’s depth and finally give a spotlight to a long-overlooked DC character. Many believe Alan Ritchson, known for his role in Reacher, may be in line for this complex part.
