Cappu Films Launches Busan Prize-Winner ‘Waterdrop’ and Competition Title ‘So It Goes’ at Tokyo Market (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional narratives, I am absolutely thrilled about Cappu Films‘ lineup at TIFFCOM this year! Having spent countless hours immersed in the intricate world of cinema, I can confidently say that the upcoming psychological thriller “Waterdrop” and the crime comedy “So It Goes” are right up my alley.

Based in Hong Kong, film sales company Cappu Films plans to initiate global distribution efforts for two movies they recently showcased at the Busan festival, by utilizing TIFFCOM – the rights market associated with the Tokyo International Film Festival.

At the Busan festival held recently, “Waterdrop,” a psychological thriller, took home two awards. Meanwhile, “So It Goes,” a crime comedy, was nominated for the Jiseok Award category.

Established by independent filmmaker Janice Woo in 2018, Cappu is a company with branches in Hong Kong, Beijing, and Los Angeles. Its primary focus lies in supporting emerging filmmakers and producing genre films and television shows that have international appeal. The company’s activities extend to international sales and distribution. Currently, Janice Woo is spearheading the sales initiative in Tokyo from October 30th to November 1st.

“Waterdrop” – A captivating debut film by Korean director Choi Jongyong that falls into the category of coming-of-age thrillers. The story revolves around a 13-year-old girl named Su-yeon, who becomes an orphan after her grandmother’s demise. In order to avoid being sent to a children’s home, she observes an influential couple who have adopted a seven-year-old girl called Seon-yul and seem to be living in bliss. Su-yeon attempts to forge a bond with Seon-yul, but her behavior becomes more and more questionable as time goes by.

The movie recently received two prestigious awards: the Chorokbaem Media Award for new directors in Korean cinema and the CGK Award for cinematography in Busan. The jury commended its “precise yet subtle direction” and the “stunning performances of its young actors,” which they found particularly impressive. Earlier this year, the screenplay for “Waterdrop” won the Korean Film Council’s Korean film screenplay competition in 2022.

The movie titled “So It Goes,” directed by Lee Haram, follows the story of a passionate couple who find themselves on a chilling journey, as they drive around committing heinous crimes together. The Busan programmers have labeled this film as an eccentric and singular creation, stating that it exists in a genre-defying realm unmatched by anything else. This intriguing production seamlessly combines elements of serial-killer horror, road movies, humor, and romance.

Lee’s 2022 release “Beyond” had earlier been featured in the Vision section of the Busan International Film Festival and garnered accolades at both the Busan Independent Film Festival and the Seoul Independent Film Festival. In 2023, his movie “Forgotten Soldier” was invited to the Busan Independent Film Festival. The upcoming film “So It Goes” marks his third feature production.

Cappu Films’ TIFFCOM schedule showcases an array of intriguing productions. Among them is “August,” the cycling documentary starring Chinese pop sensation Zhang Zhehan, which delves into the fallout from a digital media uproar that temporarily halted his acting career. Additionally, there’s “Go! Snails,” a Korean sports drama offering insights into the world of wheelchair basketball. Furthermore, “The Stench” is a Korean psychological horror film focusing on a mysterious death at a study retreat attended by a driven group of young individuals trying to conceal their secret. Lastly, Vivian Kerr’s debut production, “Scrap,” offers a poignant drama set in Los Angeles that explores themes of motherhood, femininity, and reconciliation.
