Capcom's Big New Game Is Digital-Only, But It Isn't Abandoning Physical Games Altogether

As a long-time gamer with a deep appreciation for the history and tradition of physical game collections, I was initially taken aback by Capcom’s recent announcement about their shift towards digital-only releases. The image of that beautiful Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess box art left me feeling a pang of nostalgia and a sense of loss for the potential absence of such physical treasures in my collection.

Recently, Capcom unveiled Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess as their latest offering, which could mark the beginning of a new series. Notably, this title is among an increasing number of games opting for digital-only launches, foregoing physical editions. However, Capcom wishes to reassure their loyal supporters that they have no plans to abandon traditional physical game releases.

At a recent gathering of Capcom’s stockholders, the corporation shared that due to a large segment of consumers preferring tangible games, they presently have no plans to discontinue producing such items.

As a gamer in 2023, I’ve noticed an interesting trend with Capcom – an impressive 90.1% of their sales last year were digital! In fact, just a few years prior, in 2020, they hit 80%, with the ultimate goal of reaching 90%. Well, they not only met but surpassed that target, making digital sales the backbone of their revenue across consoles, PC, and mobile platforms. For the upcoming year, Capcom anticipates an even more significant increase, projecting a whopping 93% of their total sales will come from digital channels.

As an avid gamer, I’m thrilled about the upcoming release of Marvel vs. Capcom: Fighting Collection – Arcade Classics, which will be available both physically and digitally. However, with Capcom’s recent trend indicating a growing number of digital-only games, it’s not unimaginable that we might eventually see fewer physical releases in the future. But for now, let’s focus on enjoying this new collection!
