Cannes Un Certain Regard Entry ‘Caravan’ From Zuzana Kirchnerová Boarded for World Sales by Alpha Violet (EXCLUSIVE)

Based in Paris, sales company Alpha Violet has secured global distribution rights for “Caravan,” the debut feature by Czech director Zuzana Kirchnerová. This heartwarming movie centers around a mother and her disabled son as they embark on an adventure-filled road trip. The film is set to make its premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

The TV show “Caravan” features Aňa Geislerová, a well-known Czech actor (from “Havel,” “Anthropoid”), playing a mother who has been tired from years of caring for her child with intellectual disabilities. This mother then embarks on an enlightening trip through Italy with her son, as suggested by the plot summary.

Based on her own journey as a mother to a child with Down syndrome and autism, “Caravan” is a deeply personal narrative that delves into themes of motherhood and defiance. This moving film has made a significant comeback by being selected for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, marking Czech cinema’s return to this esteemed event’s main selection after over 30 years. The last majority Czech film in the festival’s main program was Jan Švankmajer’s “Faust” back in 1994.

In her director’s statement, Kirchnerová expressed that she aimed to craft a movie that could be enjoyable, sensual, and subtly humorous, even though the topic was challenging. Previously, she had been awarded the Cinéfondation Prize at Cannes in 2009 for her short film ‘Bába.’

The movie titled “Caravan” is jointly produced by MasterFilm from the Czech Republic and Nutprodukcia from Slovakia, with additional production by Tempesta in Italy and other collaborators. This production was filmed in the Italian regions of Emilia Romagna and Calabria.

In a statement, Alpha Violet’s co-CEO Virginie Devesa lauded “Caravan” as a potent call to let go, immerse oneself in the present, and view life’s challenges as unexpected blessings. Devesa also commended Kirchnerová for her authentic portrayal of maternal guilt in “Caravan,” describing it as a unique piece of exceptional strength and sincerity.

Some recent films on Alpha Violet’s release schedule are “Sujo,” Mexico’s entry for the 2024 Oscars that received the World Cinema dramatic grand jury prize at Sundance in 2024, and “How to Be Normal and the Strangeness of the Other World” by Austrian director Florian Pochlatko. This latter film debuted at Berlin earlier this year.
